Session 20 Report
General Summary
As the party makes attempts to cross the broken bridge leading back to the mainland and city, they discover the probable reason that the small island has been abandoned as they are attacked by a giant octopus prowling the waters around the lighthouse!
They retreat from the waters but the octopus' assault continues with the long reach of its tentacles. They manage to wear down the creature with a variety of ranged attacks and Valqinor finishes it off with a guiding bolt energized by the power of the Feywild Shard he holds on his person-- activating its mysterious properties as a wild magic conflux switches Valqinor's position with the octopus. The carcass of the sea creature drops onto the grass as Valqinor finds himself submerged under water. What other strange effects could the shard have on his magic?
With the threats on the small island neutralized, they finally manage to cross the water back to the mainland and head back towards the Northern gates of the city, finding that a recent procession of soldiers has recently crossed through. The party, in their beaten and disheveled state, is taken as refugees and allowed past the gates, where they meet Severin, a high-ranking Bishop in the Church of Plenty. Severin briefly extols the virtues of piety and Big Richard whispers to him that the gods are a lie, to which Severin only smiles politely.
Reeking from their trek through the sewers and worn out by the events of the day, the party takes some time to clean up at the bathhouse and change into a fresh change of clothes.
The party reconvenes with Brennon, where they report the tragic yet expected news that Aidan is indeed gone. They give Brennon his son's locket back and get their reward. Curious about the ring in their possession that drew such interest form the shapeshifter, they ask Brennon if there is someone in the city that might be able to identify an item. Brennon tells them about that the Wall Market has an on-call wizard named Mathesius, though he is not always present at the store. On the subject of the upcoming banquet, Brennon says he might be able to bring a single guest with him.
At Brennon's suggestion, the party goes to meet one of the Commanders of the City Guard, Walton Darmody, as he is known to be reasonable and dedicated to the safety of the city. At the guardhouse, they meet Darmody, who cuts an imposing figure with a gruff demeanor, but listens intently as the party describes what transpired in the sewers with the goblins, the poison, and their worry of shapeshifters meddling in Cressen. Though skeptical, the party recalls that "Darmody" is a familiar name and present the bloody letter they found on the path to Cressen that never made its way to Commander Remme posted by Distow. This letter gives some more credence to the party's claims and the commander says he'll have his people investigate the sewers to verify their claims. He also reluctantly admits that he himself has had misgivings over the Lady Anna's actions of late and worries that she has been negatively influenced by the Church in recent weeks...
