Session 6 Report

General Summary

While looting the bodies of bandits, Halston asks the party if they've ever had a corpse attack them. He explains that about twenty years ago he was tasked to look into the status of a village in the northern swamps and found that the villagers had been turned into undead by a necromancer. It's been years since but he escaped, reported it to the government, and maps were updated to remove the village. His job was done but Halston was never sure if the problem was ever actually taken care of. Lephnut expressed interest in one day investigating and Halston marked the area on their map.   Big Richard asks Valqinor to explain where he got the power displayed in the previous fight when he cast Thunderwave. Valqinor says he was blessed by his god Kord, which Big Richard refuses to believe, being thoroughly unfamiliar with the concept of gods or religions. Halston is confused by Big Richard's unwillingness to believe in higher powers and lack of understanding of why people worship gods. He suggests Richard visit the Church of Plenty in Cressen some time so that he might possibly commune with the gods himself.   After it gets dark on the road to Distow, the party finds a nestled spot in the woods to spend the night. While on watch, Valqinor notices incoming footsteps-- hurried, as if running from something. Valqinor attempts to wake the party but only Lephnut reacts immediately, Big Richard is trying to force some sleep while Jett and Halston are still lights out. Valqinor and Lephnut see two goblins, led by a hobgoblin approaching warily, appearing heavily injured and their equipment beat up from a recent fight. Big Richard wakes groggily when this is explained, while the others still sleep for several moments as a fight breaks out. During the fight, Little Richard is spooked and tears himself free from the tree he was tied do, forcing Big Richard to try to wrangle the beast before it absconds with the group's possessions. Big Richard and Jett both try unsuccessfully to calm and intimidate Little Richard respectively into slowing down. Valqinor uses his Command to magically halt the beast, after which Big Richard is finally able to make the elk stop running. The enemy goblins are slain easily in their weakened state and Halston keeps an uneventful watch for the rest of the night as the party finally manages to finish their interrupted sleep.   The next day, the party pushes through the night after Halston indicates that Distow isn't far past the Wending River they can hear ahead. Along the way, they see along the road goblin corpses, broken weapons, and the littered remains of battle. Arriving in Distow late at night, they are stopped by a guard at the southern gate who asks if Big Richard has a license for his elk. Big Richard convinces the guard that he lost it in a scuffle with goblins, which the guard believes but tells the party to be safe, not cause any trouble inside, and to replace that   Jett and Lephnut go to Fimdie's Tavern to eat and buy a room for the night, while Big Richard and Valqinor have Halston lead them to a place they could stable Little Richard for the night. Halston leads them to a stable in the city, but the lights in the building are off. Big Richard disregards this and bangs on the door anyway, where they are greeted by an incredibly irate dwarf who screams at Big Richard for interrupting his sleep. Attempts to diffuse the situation and promises of pay are rebuffed by the dwarf who slams the door in the group's face. Halston says the other stable he knows of is outside the eastern gates and is most likely also closed so Big Richard and Valqinor decide to regroup at the tavern.   At the tavern, Jett and Lephnut are greeted by a lively red-headed gnome, Maya, behind the bar who takes their orders. They notice that, strangely, Maya speaks with a different accent to each new group that enters but pay no heed to it. Most folk in the tavern are common folk, busy in conversation and meals, but Lephnut notices an elf sitting alone by himself in the corner, staring glumly into his drink. Lephnut tries to talk to the elf but is brushed off-- apparently the man is having a very bad day, week, and month. Lephnut points out the elf to Valqinor, who along with Big Richard, goes to invite the elf over for company.   Richard, immensely drunk, makes a bad impression with his drunken and broken Elvish dialect. Valqinor takes a nicer tack and after some cajoling, the elf explains that his name is Ciaran and that he is a candlemaker. He came from the elven conclave of Endymion to the east after hearing that a flower known as the Yellow Harlequin grows near Distow. The flower is supposed to have a unique scent that becomes whatever the smeller imagines it to be, which would be very useful when distilled into an oil for Ciaran's candles. After a rough journey to Distow, his hopes to obtain a bundle of the flowers were dashed when he found he arrived too late-- the western region past Distow where the flowers are found is currently blockaded by a legion of Cressen's military as they are fighting goblins. He's growing weary of staying in Distow and plans to leave, but the group says they can help him obtain these flowers.   Finishing their meals, they ask Maya for rooms to stay the night but are informed there are only 3 left: two common rooms and one suite. The suite has a bed and a couch, which Valqinor and Big Richard take up, while Jett and Lephnut are assigned the common rooms. Halston thanks the group for their time and says he's leaving to attend to his business in the city. The lackluster furnishings of the common room offered to Jett are not up to her high standards of living and she asks Maya for a better room but is told again that there are no other rooms. Jett attempts to intimidate Maya by summoning her magical knives but it draws guards ready to break up a scuffle. Maya plays along and says Jett was just showing her a magic trick so no fighting breaks out but Jett is not satisfied and asks for another inn with better rooms. She is directed to go to Crenshaw's Inn then, but warned that he is not a nice man.   Jett attempts to go to Crenshaw's Inn but has no idea where it is, and after wandering around in the pitch blackness of the night, ends up in a dark alleyway where she is cornered by a mugger. After a brief scuffle where Jett is stabbed by the man, she uses a fog cloud to run away, chased by the mugger down the streets of Distow. Shouting for help, a guard manages to round the corner as the mugger catches up to Jett and helps her incapacitate the man. The guard says he is Captain Welford and shows Jett to where Crenshaw's Inn is so that she can rest. After he warns her not to fall for Crenshaw's hustling, Welford leaves, dragging the mugger to jail.   Inside, Jett meets Crenshaw-- a greedy-looking old man-- who is both surprised and pleased to see someone showing up so late. Crenshaw tries to sell Jett a room for 5 gold but quickly acquiesces when Jett once again uses her magic knives in an attempt to intimidate. Crenshaw lowers his price and Jett finally finds a place to sleep...
