The Silt Swamp

Despite its name the Silt Swamp actually contains very little surface water. Rather, most of the region in an inland silt basin with numerous mudflat islands surrounded by lakes and rivers of silt. Often even the mudflats are covered by a thin layer of silt making navigation by foot treacherous as unwary travelers might suddenly slip into deep silt. Instead, most travel in the Silt Swamp is done in small silt skimmers rarely able to carry more than a couple of dozen people. Larger vessels risks becoming trapped in the mudbanks leaving its occupants vulnerable to the local fauna.   Compared the rest of Athas the Silt Swamp region does have an abundance of vegetation owing mostly to the moisture trapped within the muddy soil. This limits visibility and provide ample nourishment for the local wildlife. Still it rarely grows to become actual forests as the mudflats are prone to drying out, when the silt shielding them from the sun happens to be blown away. Stable mudflats are among the nobility's most prized territory as it makes long-term agriculture a possibility.   Near the center of the Silt Swamp lies its only major source of surface water - an oasis surrounded by the city of Takol. The water contained in the oasis is heavily rationed by the templars, and it is constantly under heavy guard to prevent unlicensed access and possible theft or sabotage. While the population gets by on their water rations water remains a precious commodity that only the nobility takes for granted.
