Royal Jelly of Persephone IV
While the crew of the Warp Ship Wyldspace were intently investigating a planet teaming with life halfway between the plants and fungus kingdoms of Earth, a reconnaissance drone went off program and crashed someplace dark underground. With the ranking officers and top scientists busy studying the unusual life forms, Captain Bombay selected two more-available members of the crew to recover it.
She gave them strict orders that if they encountered anything they couldn't handle, that they should press a panic button on a wrist strap to call reinforcements from the ship.
The men were underwhelmed by her confidence in them but took the emergency communication wrist straps and set out to prove themselves capable of a simple "search and recover" mission.
They landed their Stinger shuttle as close as it could fit into the increasingly dense forest of towering mushrooms with strange floral heads.
One of the men was a Chef onboard, and he immediately wanted to follow his nose to a very pleasant scent of possible culinary interest. The Sonic technician noticed that the lost drone was sending a signal from the same direction.
The three crawled and climbed into a long hexagonal cave which opened into a tall thin crevasse of a cavern. There laid the nonfunctional drone on a hexagonal pedestal.
They could have taken it and left none the wiser about the meaning of this odd cave, but curiosity got the better of them. One wall was somehow unnatural, composed of hexagons of a seemingly paper-like material. Sonic poked at the paper and ripped through it with his bare hands. Immediately, he was splashed and covered by a golden yellow jelly which guzzled out of the space which appeared to be a storage container closet of some kind.
The Chef immediately recognized the smell of a new edible material they had just discovered. Chef analyzed the material intently while Sonic tried to wipe himself clean of the sticky syrup... and failed.
Chef insisted that they collect all they could find of this odd natural sugary jelly and take it back for further study.
They almost made it back to the shuttle with their makeshift containers overloaded with the golden goo.
Two bee-like bipedal creatures standing significantly taller than the men seemed a bit upset at the theft. One pointed at Chef angrily. Chef pointed at himself and shook his head in disagreement. The two guards turned to look at Sonic, who (against his will) was still dripping with the golden syrup, raising one eyebrow at Chef.
The guards took the two, their ill-gotten booty, and the mechanical drone to their queen, a massive creature seated in an even more massive court chamber. As soon as the guards released the men, Chef prepared to hit his panic button. He looked to Sonic inquisitively. Sonic appeared to feel pain at the thought of pressing the panic button. He shook his head in disagreement.
The queen buzzed at the guards and at Sonic and Chef. One guard pointed to the buckets of stolen royal jelly, spoke a few buzzes, and pointed at Sonic, buzzing something that sounded as if it could have been a dirty word.
The queen buzzed with displeasure. She pointed high up to the rafters of the court chamber where worker bees flew about various open storage closets like the first the men had seen. The bees would empty a saddlebag (perhaps an external stomach or a utility item which many of them wore) to squirt a liquid into each storage bay, blow on it, even fan it with their wings, until the liquid reduced to a sappy syrup.
While the queen buzzed a narration, Chef looked up at the activity and realized exactly what she meant. The collected liquid had to be manually "cooked" or dried to transform it into the intensely nutritious material he had analyzed.
Whenever a storage chamber was filled, the worker bees summoned a guard bee, who pulled from his mouth a waxy gum which he would smooth over the opening until it dried as a papery air-tight seal for the compartment.
The queen leaned forward menacingly and buzzed. The two confused men had no idea what she was commanding. She grabbed Sonic by the ankle and picked him up, swinging him upside down. She held him over a hexagonal pit that seemed to be filled with moist wriggling tongues.
Chef gestured at his panic button. Sonic worried a moment, then shook his head. He closed his eyes, clenched his teeth, and plugged his ears with his fingers as the queen lowered him into the pit until only his one foot could be seen.
Chef stared in horror, then glanced at his panic button again, and decided to call for help, but the instant before he touched it, the queen began to lift Sonic out again. She laid him on the ground next to Chef, wide-eyed and breathing heavily from fright, but completely clean of the golden jelly.
The two guards shoved the men's now empty makeshift buckets into their hands, picked them up around the waist, and flew into the air.
After a harrowing high-speed flight through higher and higher twisting hexagonal tunnels, they emerged into bright sunlight just above the tops of the flowering mushroom forest. The guards spied a target and took a steep dive. A huge bright red mushroom flower opened below them. The guardian bees strained and pulled out of their nosedive at the last instant as the flower snapped shut on nothing, and opened again a bloom that from close up could be seen to have rows of sharp teeth.
Two then three of the deadly blooms snapped at them. Then as two of the blooms were reopening, the two guard bees dropped, one into each maw.
Sonic in a panic, clung to his guard bee and squirmed to keep his bare feet away from the teeth. The guard bee grabbed and pulled three stamen from the bloom. It opened wide with a shriek. The bee pushed Sonic away. He looked to the bee in confusion. It waved its one unoccupied limb at him. He looked at his bucket, then at the tunnel of tall yellow writhing grass that formed its throat. He stepped in and found cool liquid squishing between his toes. He finally understood. He crouched down and pushed his bucket deep to fill with the sugary liquid he had seen the worker bees carrying. In a moment he was covered in yellow pollen but had a full bucket of nectar.
He crawled back to his guard bee as fast as he could without losing his precious cargo. The guardian appeared to be almost ready to collapse from the strain, but upon seeing Sonic, it regained its determination and waved him over.
It was a blur of motion when the guard bee picked up Sonic, released the flower and shot straight up into the air buzzing its wings.
Amazed at what he had done and seen, Sonic spied Chef, similarly carrying a full bucket and being carried to safety by the other guardian bee.
In a few more harrowing moments, they were flying through the maze of hexagonal tunnels again, coming out at the very top of the royal court chamber. The guard bees perched Sonic and Chef side by side at the highest open storage compartment. After catching their breath and a prod from the guard bees, they dumped the contents of their buckets into the hex. Another prod told them that they were to do as the worker bees did. They blew on the liquid and wiped it back inward whenever it looked to be dripping out.
A short time later, (geologically speaking) the nectar had congealed into a golden honey jelly. At that point the guard bees produced the waxy sealant and all four of them spread the hexagon shut with a wealth of nutrition waiting for when it might be needed.
At last, the guards floated the men down to the floor before the queen, who seemed satisfied that their debt had been repaid.
Sonic showed his sticky hands to Chef and to the queen. Chef held up his, seeing that he was also covered in honey up to the elbows. Sonic leapt to the side of the pit and held his hands out. A pink tongue-like thing rose up from the swarm of writhing tongues. It opened two cartoonishly large eyes and looked right at Sonic. He held his hand out, and the larva licked his hands clean. With some reluctance, Chef did likewise, and found the little larva to be cute in a way... a very weird way.
When the men turned around to look, they saw the two guards arguing over the men's electronic drone. One seemed interested in it and the other appeared to think it was useless trash.
Chef waved to get their attention, then pressed a button on the drone. It sputtered to life, buzzing and beeping. The two guard bees seemed surprised, then pointed at it and buzzed in a type of laughter. The sounds the drone made must have been some hilarious joke to them. After getting their laughs, the guard bees handed the electronic drone back to the men and helped them on their way back to the shuttle.
They were allowed to take only a small sample of the royal honey jelly and quite a story back to the Wyldspace.
