Space Deaf Jam!
One Woman builds a Society
Around 2500 AD, a Terran Warp Ship named Wyldspace travels the galaxy looking for Class M planets which might have some history or alternate technologies of great interest to the human race. The Captain of the Wyldspace is Adora Bombay, an accomplished deaf woman who graduated at the top of her class at the North American Space Academy of Michigan. Her personal style has her wrapped in retro-futuristic haute couture, unnecessary visors, blinking lights, makeup, shoulder pads and the highest of heels. Her personal technological gadgets alert her to important noises, but otherwise she is oblivious to sound. As she moved up through the ranks of the explorers, other hearing impaired people she encountered particularly enjoyed her command. By now, as captain of her own interplanetary ship, she has attracted hundreds of loyal crew working for her, working toward the simple goal of learning what is out there. Most of the crew are deaf, and the primary language used onboard is Universal Sign Language. Although many people can hear and nearly everyone can speak, the main form of communication is the nearly silent computer display, and ship-board warnings are usually in the form of flashing colored floodlights that signal danger.Typical Life
Traveling through warped space is a dangerous prospect, and the Wyldspace needs repairs almost every time it passes through a warp it has created. At the same time the destination planet or mysterious spacemark (a landmark in space) is not going to explore itself. Captain Bombay selects an away-team or two from among her crew before making a pass, but she reserves the right to change her mind after arriving at the destination and taking in the sights. All others are expected to tend to repairs and recharge the ship and generally make preparations for the next pass through warped space. Vacations are always working vacations at exotic beautiful spacemarks.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
