The Singing Sea

The Singing Sea is a majestic and historically significant body of water located between the north-eastern coast of the continent of Eldvar and the island of Fintan. This enchanting sea connects to the Imperial Sea in the west and The Sea of Storms in the north. It is renowned for its strategic importance, bustling trade routes, and the captivating stories associated with it.   The name "Singing Sea" has been a subject of debate among scholars, historians, and locals for centuries. Several theories exist regarding the origin of this evocative name, each with its own proponents. One popular theory suggests that the name "Singing Sea" is derived from the large number of sea birds that can be found flying over the sea. These birds are known for their melodious songs, which can often be heard echoing over the waters, creating a symphony that captivates all who sail beneath them. Another theory proposes that the sea earned its name due to the bustling trade routes that crisscross its waters. It is said that the songs of fishermen and merchant ships, as they go about their daily tasks, can be heard carried on the winds. Some believe that the sea was named after the Sirens that are said to inhabit its depths. These seductive creatures are known for their entrancing songs, which could have inspired the name as sailors and travelers were enchanted by the mysterious melodies.

Geography

The Singing Sea is flanked by the nations of Asteasea and Kholdor to the west, while the east coast of the island of Fintan lies to the east. To the north, it merges with the tempestuous Sea of Storms, while to the south, it blends into the Sea of Claws. Additionally, the Singing Sea connects to The Sea of Three Crowns through the Mouth of the Dragon, a narrow strait that separates Asteasea from Kholdor.   This sea is a vital hub for maritime trade, featuring bustling shipping lanes that link The Avartian Empire in the east to the Kingdoms of Eldvar in the west. Throughout history, it has played a pivotal role in facilitating commerce and conquest, particularly during the Avartian conquest of northern Eldvar when it served as the primary route for the Avartian navy to access their provinces.   Despite the occasional stormy weather that can sweep down from the north, the Singing Sea is generally tranquil for most of the year.

Fauna & Flora

The Singing Sea is home to a large array of marine life, including various seabird species, schools of fish, playful dolphins, majestic whales, and serene seals. However, the sea is also said to be home to a number of strange and monsterous creatures:   Cetus: Perhaps one of the most enduring legends associated with the Singing Sea is that of Cetus, a colossal whale-like creature with massive tusks and a spined back. According to local folklore, Cetus dwells beneath the sea's depths and is believed to exact a sea tithe. To appease this mysterious beast, sailors traditionally toss a single gold piece into the water at the commencement of each crossing. This ritual is said to ward off the wrath of Cetus and ensure safe passage.   Sirens: Another captivating tale linked to the Singing Sea involves the elusive Sirens. These enchanting and ethereal beings are believed to reside in the sea's vicinity, using their mesmerizing voices to lure unsuspecting sailors into the depths. The allure of their singing has led many sailors astray, adding an element of danger and mystique to the already captivating sea. It is even suggested that the sea's name may have originated from the haunting songs of these enigmatic creatures.
