Founded as a port during the rule of the K'Thonum, Paethinope was built close to a large mountain named Vesuvius. The port thrived until the first day of The Great Darkening when the mountain detonated like a bomb, blowing its top and burying the region around it in ash and pyroclastic flows. One such flow clipped the edge of the city, burning half of it and burying the rest in 12 feet of ash. residents that managed to flee returned to find their homes, supplies, and foodstuffs buried. Faced with starvation they dug tremendous parts of the city out to retrieve the stored foods.
Their part of the world wasn't the only one that was wrecked. As the rest of the world struggled to feed itself, the newly rebuilding port began calling itself Neopolis found that the volcano had unintentionally created a new sheltered harbor for it. Using surviving fishing boats, and the last of the buried supplies they created an ocean going complex for both fishing and kelp farming that kept the region from completely starving to death during the Great Darkening. This established it as a major port for the region.
At the end of the Great Darkening, the growing port city formed one of the first City States of what much later became Lombardia. influencing the region and eventually it became part of the Remen Empire. Today it is a key founding City State of the Alliance of Lombardia a. While its ships mostly trade in the Mediterranean Sea, ambitious traders for Neopolis can be found as far away as the Tenochca Lands where they trade for rare dyes (such as the coveted red dye), herbs, and other rare goods.

It has numerous catacombs as well dug into the compacted ash around it, that makes it a convenient way to implement sewers as well as cooling storage. It is renowned for its painted buildings, and the panorama of lit colored buildings is quite the sight at night.

Neopolis is stunning! One morning I woke up just as the sun was peeking out over the horizon and it looked like a rainbow of buildings. Oh and the women are stunning, they have cosmetics there you can't get anywhere else. I think some of it comes from those lands across the Western Ocean.
