Soulkeeper

Soulkeepers are small, painstakingly crafted pendants made of precious metals and set with a gemstone of Etherealite. They serve as the reminders of the beloved deceased to the people of Atraeleon. Soulkeepers are adorned with intricate designs on them that represent Pharasma's domains of death, fate, and prophecy. They are also inscribed with the name of the deceased and other personalized details, while their Etherealite gems adorn the center. Only Forgepriests of Moradin know the secret of their creation.   During The Passage, Soulkeepers are placed in special recesses all around the pedastal where the deceased is lain. When the rite is finished and the body returns to Pharasma, parts of the soul remain behind in Soulkeepers for each person the deceased considered a true friend or loved one. Each pendant becomes engraved by the ritual's magic, and the Etherealite begins glowing with the same purple light seen during The Passage.   Most Atraelians choose to wear their various Soulkeepers at all times, as it is believed a piece of the person's soul remains in the gem to guide their surviving loved ones from the afterlife. Some see the bearing of many Soulkeepers as a sign of trustworthiness or loyalty, as only a truly great person would find themselves considered that close to so many who have already passed. Others prefer to build shrines in their homes, but there are no graveyards in the Atraelian Empire, as no honorable Atraelian would leave their loved ones alone in a strange place for eternity.   When an Atraelian dies, all of their Soulkeepers are carefully placed on their body as The Passage begins. When the body disappears, so do the Soulkeepers. In this way, the souls of the departed are finally allowed to continue to the afterlife, no longer being needed by this loved one, who now joins them in part.
