Religions in Thrane

The Silver Flame

The modern Church of the Silver Flame was founded in Thrane, and most of the nation's people follow this faith. The Purified, as follows of the faith call themselves, worship a divine entity of nonmortal origin. Still, their god claims no dominion over the world, nor that it has existed since the Dragons formed that world, unlike the Sovereign Host or the Dark Six. The Silver Flame is a god with a purpose, and only those of equal principle are drawn to service.   The Purified are bound together by numerous rites and traditions, by many beliefs, but only a single religious doctrine, called the Tenet of Purity:
Burn the corruption and taint of evil from all Eberron. Other gods have begun the creation, but it is the Silver Flame, by searing wickedness and darkness from their imperfect world, that must complete it.
This belief that the world can only be made perfect by the Silver Flame and its followers embodies the height of arrogance in the eyes of the followers of other religions, but it is absolutely central to the faith of the Purified. They acknowledge the existence and divinity of other gods, such as the Sovereign Host and the Dark Six, and of the three great Dragons. They even honor them, knowing them worthy of respect. After all, the Silver Flame never claimed to be a creator deity, and it has not even existed as long as Eberron itself.   Even so, the Purified believe that although the Silver Flame was not the first god of Eberron, it will be the last.

The Sovereign Host

Roughly 3% of Thrane’s citizens worship the Sovereign Host instead of the Silver Flame. Modest shrines to the Sovereign Host can be found in most of the nation’s major settlements, although they pale next to the Silver Flame’s magnificent and ostentatious cathedrals. Groups who worship the deities of the Sovereign Host are collectively called the Host of the Faithful. They can trace their lineage back through centuries of Thrane’s history, and they are as much citizens of the nation as those who hold the Silver Flame as infallible.    By ignoring them, the theocracy relegates the Host of the Faithful to second-class citizens. In an incendiary postwar culture, worshipers of the Sovereign Host must remain vigilant and find quiet ways to legitimize their religion. Religious intolerance does not pervade Thrane’s society, but devout followers of one religion remember those who openly practice other religions. Many members of the Host choose to hide their religious affiliation, pretending to revere the Silver Flame while attending secret services for the Sovereign Host. While the theocracy tolerates such activity when it is found, Flame devotees are sometimes less forgiving.
