Steamjet wagon
The Steamjet was invented and constructed by a gnomish magister named Squibblybee.
The construction began as a simple wooden platform atop two reinforced axels, fore and aft with study wooden wheels, bound with iron rims. At the centre of the structure was supported a rather large metal canister in the shape of a silo, but placed horizontal, rather than vertical. This silo was half filled with water, (and perhaps a little salt to help it boil faster).
Underneath the silo was placed a boiler. Yes, a boiler, but of coal? Oh no. No, this was a boiler that was specifically designed and created to capture and imprison none other than a fire elemental, thus negating the need for fuel of any other sort. The boiler itself was manufactured not only of reinforced iron, but had to be magically enhanced to contain said elemental, not to mention the skill involved of keeping the damned thing in there!
Upon the front of the cart there was placed a mast and sail, and wooden seats were placed on either side, with leather bracings, if only to give the passengers a false sense of security. Other renditions of the cart had been attempted with secondary, and indeed, even tertiary masts, all seemily counteractive to the nature of the jet itself and were soon abandoned after the initial tests.
The main platform was big enough to stand four horses, and many a maiden voyage accommodated such, although due to the nature of the low probability of equine survival at the end of the voyage, this was replaced by barrels of salt water to refuel the steam silo.
Unfortunately, the greatest flaw in the design, which, at speed was said to be the fastest vehicle even known to man and gnome alike, was in fact the braking system, which consisted of hardwood levers applied to the wheel rims themselves, and upon many tests, was proven to be not just particularly ineffective, but downright dangerous.
Flaws considered, the SteamJet is still considered the fastest land vehicle ever built.
