Tom Middleton
Tom, who was also known as "Old Tom" later in life or "Squint" when he was younger.
Tom started his working life as a deck hand on a merchant ship, eventually working his way up the ranks to then captain his own ship for the company.
It only took him a few years before he saved up enough money as captain to purchase his own ship and work as a privateer, taking jobs hauling cargo for various companies. He called his ship Bessy, which was the name of his childhood dog. Some mocked him for that ship name but he didn't care. He commanded a crew of fifty-five men on his large Birlinn type ship. Eventually he turned to piracy, capturing cargo and hostages which he sold and ransomed off for large amounts of money. One day in the year 994, he was attacked by ships of the royal navy of Laighenlia and captured.
One of the high ranking officials at the trial owed him a large favor and thus his and his first mate Nelson's death sentence at the gallows was turned into a ten year stay in one of the kingdom's prisons. His ship was seized and sold to a merchant who has been using it as part of his merchant fleet since. Tom was released from prison in late 1004. Directionless he wandered around doing various jobs for people in towns he passed through and drank his sorrows away. Eventually he got a stable job as a dock hand at the port in Grimport. He would give anything to get out to see again, preferably on his old ship.
