Career Progression
One can advance from simple town guard to Sargent and after that one may be promoted to Captain of the Guard.
Payment & Reimbursement
2 silver up to 5 gold a day is the average amount a town guard gets paid, depending on rank and location.
Other Benefits
Apart from the pay, one also gets a place to sleep in the town barracks with a free meal.

May also be called to fight in war if needed.
Social Status
The more wealthy people usually respect the town guard.
The lower you go on the social ladder the less respect one seems to have for the guards.

The town guard usually have quilted cloth armour called a gambeson and a shirt of mail as well as a iron or steel helmet as armour.
As weapons they usually carry a shield, spear and arming sword. When stationed on towers and walls they sometimes get given bow and arrow as weapons.
Dangers & Hazards
Monsters, enemy armies, brigands and bandits are the usual threats one faces in this profession.
A less common but still valid danger is fires that may break out in the villages and towns which the guards will be employed to put out.
