Bog Mandragora (Bog Man-Drag-Or-a)
Bog Mandragora are a rare root that possess various magical effects, and can be used as an alchemical reagent. It also excretes a juice that can be "milked" to use as a very potent poison.
Basic Information
Anatomy
In daylight a Bog Mandragora is indistinguishable from a common turnip afflicted by a touch of black rot. It will express a small amount of foul smelling milky fluid if squeezed. Its true appearance is only seen in moonlight or by creatures with Truesight. In this situation the root of the Bog Mandragora has a very strong resemblance to a tiny human corpse, bloated and contorted in pain. In this state the fluid comes from its mouth.
Ecology and Habitats
A Bog Mandragora grows in places of extreme flux between the mortal realm, the fey realm, and the shadow realm. It can only grow in earth directly beneath a man who has been wrongfully hanged. When a rooted Bog Mandragora is pulled from the earth, it wails like a hurt infant and projects a Circle of Death (save DC 15). The accepted method of harvesting the Bog Mandragora is to tie the root to a loyal hound and then call to the animal from safety. This method kills the dog.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Drinking the juice of the Bog Mandragora requires a DC 17 Constitution Save. On a failure, the drinker is reduced to 0 hp and starts Dying. Any healing forces an additional save. On a success the drinker becomes Poisoned but also regains all spent spell slots. Each successful use of Mandragora Juice increases the DC of the save by 2, permanently.
Rubbing Mandragora Juice on the body gives the effect of a Fly spell, but does not work if the recipient is wearing clothes.
There are a number of alchemical recipes that call for Mandragora Juice, and certain fey creatures have been able to use the root as a vessel similar to a Soul Jar or lich phylactery
