Week 1 prep
I'm looking forward to Worldember this year. I think this is my 3rd time stoking the fires but the last times was so much fun I can't reist joining in this one.
Focus:
The biggest problem I've had with my own worldbuilding is scale, and that I like to jump around; I like big worlds and I cannot help it. I have a lot of ideas but all are so spread out that they feel very disconnected. So for this worldember I'm going to try to focus on two specific areas of Aurelimoore:
The foundations: Be it ancient history, core kingdoms or magic, I feel I have to flesh out some of the basics and fill in the world as a whole.
2 smaller regions: To reduce the scale i'm working at, I plan to focus on the lands of near
Nárarmr, and also the areas surrounding
The Great Unknown. Over the coming year, it is my hope to build on what I write in worldember and completely flesh out these places, their people and the myths and legends hiding there. Additionally I hope to make some real progress on a first draft of my novel set in my world.
Week 2 Prep
My mini meta would be for the world around
Nárarmr, its people, organizations, and general ways of life.
Scope:
Nárarmr is a city of undeath and I plan to fill in the mythos around it from the people, places, and organizations dwelling within.
Theme and Mood:
Dark and somber, its a place of undeath and celebrating mortal death.
Goals:
I'd like to finish fleshing out this area and give it the personality I envision.
Week 3 Prep
I updated some of the language on the homepage, added a subtitle, added tags, and the Excerpt.
Week 4 Prep
Writing Space:
My desk is a cleaned and clear as it will likely be. I have my Lord of the Rings soundtracks setup in a playlist, and my leather and tobacco candle set ready to go.
Writing Treats:
I will probably need to buy some more treats, maybe a nice new whiskey. I already have plenty of coffee to make and help get through the cold and he me focus.
Writing Time:
Time, well thats always up for debate. I've set some time aside to work at home and potentially if I am slow at work I can write some then too.
Writing Support:
I have plenty of support through this community, the players in my DnD campaign, most importantly my awesome wife and kids.
Something that helps combat the creative wandering, and reaching goals in general, is to make them SMART. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. The more you can narrow down exactly what you'll be doing, the better. Maybe draw out some categories and article stubs now that you know you'll be working on when this kicks off.
Thanks, thats great advice I'll have to do some pondering and narrow my focus.
