Personal history
His childhood was bereft of interest as his mother commanded and spearheaded legions against the demon scourge. She was never home for too long, instead her sparce visits became the only thing Calen lived for. When she was around she kept his father’s fanatical teaching at bay. She did all that she could to educate her son in the ways of an Elf.
Then came the day he would remember like no other, sitting in the shade of The Evertree staring up through its long and endless branches to the tiny bit of Sunlight that creeped its way through. A leaf fell and fluttered slowly from one of the branches before landing in between his legs in front of him. Suddenly, the great elk horns sounded through all of the Endless Forest. Their ear shattering bellow marking an Elvish victory, an end to a struggle a hundred years in the making.
The returning warriors were met with riotous applause and admiration, riches showered down from The Evertree as people draped their heroes in fine silks and wreaths of dunderberries. Song and dance filled the mornings into the darkness of night, one hundred days of feasting one day for each year.
Calen's mother never came back, as more and more Elvish soldiers trickled in from the front lines he finally got the news that she had died in the final push. It was then, that very moment, when the world died for a few moments. The music stopped, the drinks dried up, the forest went silent. The green turned grey, the world had lost it's color.
It took two weeks for the dead to be collected and buried in the Endless Forest, very few attended the burial ceremony. They buried his mother under a large tree on a crested hill, a long and twisting tree with beautiful flowering branches. Calen visited it often.
The demon scourge had been bested after a hundred years of war. The price higher than anyone could of ever expected. A leaf of the ever tree, firmly in his grasp Calen could feel nothing but resentment for his people. For the next fifteen years Calen spent his days under the strict hand of his father. He’d escape to the Forest whenever he could to continue the teachings of his mother, only to be chastised and abused upon his return home. His father was unsympathetic, he’d spent Caleb’s whole adolescence trying to uproot the ideals his wife had planted. The seed sprouted, it grew, and it shaped the man his son would become. Calen decided that the world was not just the inside of the confines of his homeland, it was outside their doors, their trees, and their sight.
He collected the few belongings he had and visited his mother’s grave. Holding her bow tightly to his chest, he held her teachings deeply in his heart. It was there he said his farewell, it was there he hardened his heart. He stepped back from the tree and loosed an arrow into it, breaking off a large piece of its bark. That was the last time Calen was seen in Aldalome.
Education
Calen learned to use the surroundings to his advantage, how the trees and the animals were his allies, how the Forest was worth fighting for and most of all how to hunt and survive.
