Session 2 - The City Watch

General Summary

Jadis, the city watch commander, wastes no time in giving her new recruits orders. Verik, one of her soldiers, has recently defected the watch with a few of her other men and holed up in a shop called All the World's Meat. Rumor is that they are handing out meat for free to the poorest in Cordova and have started calling themselves the Cow Hammer Boys. No matter how noble their motives seem to be, men cannot be allowed to desert during these troubling times. She worries that sending a large squad to apprehend them might cause them to flee, or even worse, fight. Sending her new recruits, gives her a better chance of getting Verik back alive.   Arriving at the shop early the next day, the group finds a line has already begun to form. Ignis learns that some of Verik's men are moonlighting as hired thugs. If you want someone to be taught a lesson, you only need to ask for the "night's special cuts". Once the crowd dies down, Draka gets brought into one of the back rooms after approaching one of the men and saying the code. Ignis, Drogo, and Pawsaurus sneak in through a side door while the Cow Hammer Boys are distracted. When Draka fails to produce money, a fight begins. Ignis loses control and kills one of the men leaving two to flee and one to be captured. Upon questioning, they learn that Verik has become paranoid, drinking heavily and refusing to leave the upstairs office in a few days. The inebriated man is easily subdued and brought back to the watch barracks.   Jadis thanks the group and implores them to help with two pressing matters. First, they save a young girl who was being hunted down by a mob convinced she had killed the king. Pawsaurus catches her after a chase and is nearly eaten by a Drain Spider. Per Jadis's instructions, the girl is handed over to Giancarlo who finds a way to spirit her from the city until things die down.   Secondly, the group heads to Eel's End, a den of vices, to obtain evidence of a foreign noble's schemes to undermine Cordova. Drogoaccidently injests drugs, while Draka learns to play a game called "Knivesies". They finally meet Devargo, ruler of Eel's End, who has the information they are looking for. The crime boss offers the group positions in his organization in exchange for the letters, but Draka counters with a challenge to play "Knivesies". The young woman has only played once before, and is terribly outclassed. Ignis subtly casts a spell and distracts Devargo long enough for Draka to drive a knife through his hand and win. Unaware of the trickery, Devargo keeps his word, and reminds them that if they ever aspire higher than the city guard, they should come find him.
