Cold. Distant. Clinical. A gleaming ivory tower of health and science, St. Christopher's is the place to be for cutting-edge medical treatment - if you can afford it. Many a miracle has been performed in these pristine, disinfected white halls.
What was once a welcoming place of healing has become a disciplined facility for treating the sick and dying. Affiliated with the University's medical school, and several prosperous medical research firms, patients are, at best, treated as a number in a queue, or worse: a test subject for some new experimental procedure. Stop, look and listen for long enough and you see the cracks in the facade; the hollow looks behind the smiling faces, the moans of suffering behind closed doors, and the light of good medicine stretched paper thin across the atrocities hidden from view.
Medical professionals that work here are forever overburdened with the constant threat of lawsuits and hospital politics. Many of the hospital’s doctors live in the aging upper-class neighbourhood surrounding the medical centre, but only the ones who became wealthy before the modern advent of HMOs, PPOs and the broad-scale decay of the City's health care budget. For the new doctors just getting into the business, it’s a never-ending maelstrom of 80-hour workweeks, back-to-back double shifts and wondering why the hell anyone would take out so many student loans to finish med school anyway.
