Hotr presides over sacrifice. Contrary to popular belief, Hotr does not just represent ritual sacrifice; it represents physical, emotional, financial, and all other kinds of sacrifice. Many temples and cults devoted to Hotr practice ritual sacrifice nonetheless, and it has long been considered evil. A severed hand is often said to be a sign of Hotr.
