Don Malakas (Dawn Mah-lah-kas)
Head of The Repolyo Family
Don Malakas is a Major NPC.
Don Malakas is the head of the Repolyo Crime Family, a noble yet corrupt Earth Kingdom family based on Omashu. He is a charismatic and benevolent leader on the outside, but inside, he is ruthless, cunning, and egoistic. A capable Earth Bender, Don Malakas is as dangerous in the battlefield as he is in business.
CABBAGE DAY
The Repolyo Family is a noble family hailing from Omashu in The Earth Kingdom. Malakas' great grand father established their prestige by being one of the leading moguls in agriculture, specifically, the Earth Kingdom's biggest supplier of cabbages. Before their agricultural dominance came about, Omashu was not known to be hospitable with crops. It was a miracle when his grandfather's farm begun to have harvests that were so frequent and hearty.
Through the years, their crop supply helped The Earth Kingdom's armies in many wars. They became a beloved family for feeding the masses. They were so well known that the Omashu Royal Family celebrated an annual event -- Cabbage Day -- to honor their legacy. On Cabbage Day, a festival is held, with many street vendors, chefs, and artisans selling Cabbage inspired goods and food. It is a vibrant celebration that foreigners visit to partake in for its festivities, culture, music, cuisine, and crafts.
The Repolyo family continued to grow their business through the eras. Their family heirloom, a ring with a mysterious jewel that was obtained by his grandfather through gambling, is the family symbol. It is cased within a blooming cabbage made of gold and meant to be worn on the pinky finger. This heirloom has been passed down through each head of the family, which historically has been the oldest male.
THE OMASHROOM
When Malakas came to be the head of the family, he had other ideas. Though he respected his family's legacy, he saw another opportunity to grow their business.
A fateful encounter with a spirit in a forest lead him to the Omashroom, a small, iridescent, blue mushroom native to Omashu's forests. The Omashroom was rare and said to only grow in places where spirits reside. The mushroom cap can relieve stress when consumed, and can be used as a spice or in a tea to calm the nerves. However, it was not the most important part of the mushroom; when in tact with the stem, it can produce spores that can induce hallucinations when inhaled.
Malakas returned to the same spot in the forest over and over to harvest the mushroom, until the spirit noticed him taking advantage of it, and moved elsewhere so that he could no longer obtain its properties. Angered by its betrayal, he hired a shaman from the Fire Nation to capture the spirit within an urn. He planted the urn behind his house, in a small plot, where the Omashroom grew for some time.
During this period, Malakas began selling the mushroom in secret. He made sure to never sell an intact mushroom head with its stalk, capturing the spores in glass containers meant to be inhaled from. His wholesome family business slowly became a drug cartel.
Though The Earth Kingdom knows about his supply of Omashroom, his noble status made him and his family untouchable. The Omashroom would begin to circulate around The Earth Kingdom, easily making more and more loyal, addicted customers.
THE DEATH OF A SPIRIT
Eventually, the spirit in the urn died of unhappiness. The Omashroom stopped growing in the little plot. Enraged, he assembled his entire family in a meeting and ordered The Replolyo Clan to look for more of these spirits and Omashrooms in the nearby forests. There were no results.
At some point, he is visited by Jianyu, an Earth Sage and master to Avatar Yun. At this point, Jianyu was a host to Okizumi, a Chaos Herald Elephantrat spirit. Jianzhu's purpose for the meeting is to awaken another Chaos Herald within his family heirloom, which is actually one of the many shards of Vaatu's powerful jewel.
At some point, The Rabaroo Spirit, Bilis, manifested itself from the ring and bonded with Don Malakas. Though Bilis was awakened by Okizumi to aid him in uniting the other Heralds to rule the world within their own empires, Bilis had no desire to help Okizumi's purpose. Instead, he was more interested in growing his power and influence alone in Omashu, which he wanted to conquer as an independent nation.
THE MOON DANCE
As Don Malakas became a host to Bilis, the Omashroom began to grow again, now at an alarming rate. It covered the entire forest behind The Repolyo Estate. This forest would be known as "The Moon Dance" because at night, the Omashroom would reflect the moon and create a sight to behold. Unsuspecting travelers would enter the Moon Dance and inhale too much of the spores, causing them to have hallucinations until they finally die of starvation, becoming part of the forest themselves. Likewise, Don Malakas would trick or punish his enemies into The Moon Dance, where they would be lost for eternity.
The Moon Dance was eventually confined, with the only entrance now through The Reployo Estate's backyard.
SEDUCING THE OMASHU QUEEN
Though Don Malakas had a loving wife, Donya Maganda, they had no sons. All of their eight children had been born as daughters, and years of trying for more children became futile as Maganda became seemingly infertile. Thus, Don Malakas began seeing the Omashu Queen, who was a widower herself with no children. His and Bilis' goal was to have an heir that could inherit both The Repolyo's business and Omashu itself, securing their legacy and power.
FACING THE NEW FLYING OPERA COMPANY
On Cabbage Day (293 BG), Don Malakas would be confronted by The New Flying Opera Company under orders from Avatar Kyoshi to obtain the gem within his ring.
