Episode 7: Rishi Alone
Master Rishi, a Northern Air Temple Elder Council member, has summoned an emergency council meeting between the four Air Temples to discuss the incoming threat posed by the Heralds of Vaatu. Rishi believes that the discord spreading around the world is caused by the return of the Heralds, who have possessed hosts of strong influence around the world. Per Air Nomad customs, any Elder from an Air Temple may summon another Elder from the other three temples to have a summit to discuss threats that would affect the Air Nations and the world as a whole. While the Air Nomads are the most spiritual people in the world, they have decided to not take action against the Heralds to avoid a global panic.
In a tower in the Northern Air Temple, Rishi meets with Master Soma from the Eastern Air Temple, Master Tau from the Southern Air Temple, and Master Yawen from the Western Air Temple. Although Soma sides with Rishi, both Yawen and Tau believe that the Heralds pose no threat to humanity because there is no evidence of their interference. They blame the chaos spreading around the world to be the result of Avatar Kuruk's inaction.
Rishi attempts to make a plea but he is shut down by Yawen, who uses Airbending to throw her voice, causing Rishi to collapse on the ground. After a tense stand-off, Yawen gives in and asks Rishi to seek evidence of the Heralds' emergence. If he is able to return with proof, the Air Nomad Councils would be able to re-convene and assess the threat.
Rishi, skeptical of Yawen's sudden judgment, continues to listen to the other Elders after he exits the room. He overhears Yawen convincing Tau and Soma that Rishi's hysteria will lead to a civil war between the Air Nomads between those who believe in the Herald's return and those who do not. Upon hearing this, Rishi finds his Sky Bison and escapes into the stormy night.
Rishi spends the next ten years in hiding in the Earth Kingdom, doing what he can to find the Heralds, their hosts, or their shards, but to no avail.
A decade later, he is ambushed in a forest by Yawen, Soma, and Tau. They have been searching for him throughout the world for a decade, declaring him a traitor and heretic to the Air Nomads, and has been sentenced to death by the United Elder Council, now led by Soma. Angry at Yawen and the Elders for resorting to violence and execution, he argues that the Air Nomads have lost their way and spirituality. He appeals to Soma before he is attacked by Tau and Yawen.
Yawen uses her Voice Throwing Airbending style to incapacitate Rishi. Knowing he is right about the Air Nomads losing their way, Soma comes to Rishi's aid and fights by his side. However, Tau and Yawen create a giant tornado and sucks trees from the root up the forest, throwing them at Soma, who they've also declared a Heretic. Soma dies in Rishi's arms when she is pinned down by the tree.
In a fit of anger, Rishi uses his Airbending to brutally murder both Tau and Yawen in retaliation. When the battle is over, he collapses in shock at how he's also been corrupted enough to murder his own people. As he ponders on his actions, he is beckoned by the voice coming from Yawen's body. He discovers that Yawen's Air Nomad pendant has a secret chamber that housed one of Vaatu's Shards. The Butterfly Boar spirit tells Rishi that they are prepared to make a deal, and Rishi stands frozen in place, realizing that the Herald's corruption had spread through the Air Nomads through Yawen.
