The Northern Air Temple
Located in the mountains along the northern coast of the Earth Kingdom continent, this was the other temple which exclusively housed male airbenders. The Northern Air Temple was the first of the four original air temples and completed construction in 4012 BG after nearly 200 years of building and carving. The incredibly high altitude at which the airbenders chose to build their complex meant that earthbenders could not be utilized; the limited oxygen was not suitable for earthbending even if earthbenders had been invited to assist.
The temple was noted for its design, which harmoniously integrated its natural surroundings into the structure; the large hallways would harness the wind and allow air to flow naturally through the building. Prior to the air nomad genocide, the temples primary purpose was to train in airbending, though they also hosted the sky bison polo championships at this temple.
Late in the Hundred Year War, a group of Earth Kingdom refugees discovered the empty temple and made it their home. They significantly altered the temple in their time there, but after the war it was restored to its former glory with help from the residents, restoration experts from across the globe, as well as the guidance of Avatar Aang, who has visited personally before the start of the war.
The Northern Air temple is now home to a branch of the Air Acolytes, and has once again become a training ground for the northern style of air bending.
The patron saint of the Northern air temple is Xuanwu, the black lion turtle of the north and the lion turtle that was previously home to the inhabitants of the northern temple. When he decided he wanted to complete his journey into the spirit world, he vowed to continue to protect them even then, and to first find them a place to stay that was safe from the dangers of the world. In the end, they settled on the mountiantops in the far north along the coast of what would later become the united Earth Kingdom.
Monks of the Northern Temple are patient, waiting for openings both in life and in battle. While they hold life sacred like all air nomads, they understand that death is a natural and necessary thing, and that all death eventually leads to life.
