Soul Tree

Basic Information

Anatomy

These unique trees get their names from the glowing core located near their base which some say resembles a soul. In reality these trees are native to the winter planet of Staragin where they would otherwise die to the cold and thus must produce their own heat. They accomplish this by building up flammable gasses in a hollow pocket at their base, clear windows formed by crystalline sugars create a prism which focused light enough to light the fumes whenever necessary. These windows also allow light from the fire to be seen through the trunk of the tree, making for quite the spectacular display, especially at night. The harden inner core of the tree is so dense that it doesn’t not burn up, instead just transferring heat to the rest of the tree via hollow veins. Smoke from the fire is let out from the same heat transfer veins which open up to the environment when they end the tips of branches. Because of this, thin wisps of smoke can often be seen trailing from the ends of the trees many branches which bristle with colorful pink leaves.

Ecology and Habitats

Due to the necessity for these trees to be occasionally exposed to sunlight to relight their inner fires, the best environment for them is away from other trees that may block the lifesaving rays. This is often out in large open areas like plains or at the tops of hills and mountains.

Dietary Needs and Habits

To extract the required amount of sustenance to keep their internal flames alight, Soul Trees have root systems that can stretch up to a few hundred feet in every direction. This serves the dual purpose of choking out other trees that compete for light and preventing the growth of new trees that might block the required sun rays.
