Marjorie Benarai

Colonel Marjorie Tajole Benerai

After the Njirralde-Obursni War, Colonel Benerai became a well-known figure throughout the Kingdom of Njirralde. Her actions in the Battle for Eddelruln brought victory when defeat was looming ahead. From rural villagers to the upper class in the capital, all know of her fame as the battle march composed by one of her soldiers quickly took hold in the minds of the children who would cheerily sing its lyrics around town.   An outstanding leader whose troops find comradship in, Marjorie has made her place in Njirralde's military despite her infamy when it comes to conflicts with those she doesn't agree with and the occassional acting out on her own. Though the higherups may find her a headache, the members of the 2nd Calvalry Regiment are proud to serve with her and have faith that she will lead them to victory.   Driven by the kingdom's abandonning of her city and the subsequent death of her family, Colonel Marjorie aims to be the person the village needed at that time, someone who can protect the people when they are in need. She doesn't need fame or glory, just the ability to protect.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Early Life
Marjorie was the only child of Lan Benarai and Margaret Benarai (née Courdone) who had a farm on the outskirts of Cirmont. Growing up, she worked on the farm when she could, taking an interest in craftwork when it came to repairing the aging fences and tools on the farm.

Formal education was hard to come by. Although she occasionally attended lessons in the city when she had no work to do, it was not very often. Most of her knowledge came from the market where she learned prices and simple mathematics as well as how to read the names of common goods when she went with her father to sell goods and stock up on supplies.

The Cirmont Massacre
At the age of 9, Marjorie became the only surviving villager of Cirmont after it was burned to the ground. Perhaps it was her youthful disobedience that saved her life for when her mother told her to be good and hide in the basement as the enemy threat neared, Marjorie escaped and ran into the woods, hoping to see her nation's valiant warriors defeat the enemy with her own eyes.

Unfortunately, what she saw was not a splendid victory but a raging fire that consumed everything she knew. Though she wished to rush back, to see her family alive and well, a large hand held her back. The general who was meant to save her village solemnly withstood her stream of expletives as she cursed him for doing nothing through her tears. Feeling responsible, though it was by order of the King, Major General Curt Douner took her under his wing.

Life in the Capital
Over the course of a few months, the general finally gained her trust, though she still clearly showed her disappointment for the parties involved in the incident. Douner took that disappointment and used is to get her interested in joining the military. Thinking that one day she could become one of the people making the decisions, that she could prevent such a thing from happening again, she eagerly trained under him, learning the sword and horseback riding as well as some basic etiquette.

When she reached the age of 13 she joined the Royal Military Academy of Njirralde, learning tactics, testing her swordsmanship against her peers, and getting respectfulness towards those in higher positions beaten into her. During this time she gained close friends in the commoner population of the academy and the ire of the nobles racking up a number of disciplinary actions for disrespect and insubordination along the way.

Education

Royal Military Academy
From the age of 13 to 16, Marjorie attended Njirralde's Royal Military Academy, the top military institution in the kingdom, located in Brevmont, the capital of Njirralde. Earning high marks in combat training and showing a promising interest in tactics, Marjorie's academic record was quite good if not for one problem. Having a disdain for people who followed orders with no thought and not showing proper respect for authority earned her many disciplinary actions related to her conduct. If not for the pressure of Major General Douner and her academic results she would have been expelled.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Battle for Eddelruln
During the Njirralden-Obursni War the Eddelruln was a key point in deciding the victor of the war. The Eddelruln is a region full of resources and it was in Obursni's hands, well guarded. The original tactic had failed and Njirralde's defeat in the Battle for Eddelruln was sure. Unwilling to admit defeat, Colonel Benerai led the Second Cavalry Regiment to launch a sneak attack on the main enemy troops in the night.

Using hit and run tactics, her mage-cavalry squadrons were able to deal heavy damage and shake the camp. The non-mage members cut down the stragglers who were trying to adapt to the situation. By the end of the night the enemy's main forces were all but wiped out and her regiment had less than 50 casualties.

Though she was reprimanded for acting alone without permission, Njirralde's troops took the opportunity and came out of the battle with a victory. In the end, she was praised for her bravery and touted as Njirralde's hero, protecting the kingdom from being overtaken by Obursni.
After the Njirralde-Obursni War, she became a role model in the eyes of many. The battle march that a member of her regiment had composed, Stand with Marjorie, became widespread and has become a song that children learn at a young age.

Failures & Embarrassments

Demotion
In xxx, Marjorie was demoted from Captain of the Fourth Cavalry Regiment's Squadron B to First Lieutenant to Troop F of the Second Cavalry Regiment's Squadron C. She was charged with insubordination due to a severe conflict with the Colonel of the Fourth Cavalry Regiment. Knowing of Marjorie's infamy with these incidents and fearing another conflict, she was transferred to the Second Cavalry Regiment which was soon to have an opening available for her.

Mental Trauma

The Cirmont Massacre
After watching her city burn down with her friends and family still in it, Marjorie developed a fear of fire and a deep distrust for the government. Although she got over her fear of fire a few years later, the distrust lingers.

Intellectual Characteristics

Quick and Outside the Box Thinking
When faced with a difficult situation with not much time to make a decision, Marjorie is great at coming up with a solution. This has helped her out in many tough spots on the field and has gained the admiration of her peers. Occasionally, however, she does not think things through enough which is why she usually runs it by someone first.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

After her city and family were sacrificed by her country to win another battle, Marjorie wanted to become the decisionmaker, to protect and defend those in need. Thus, after being baited by Major General Douner to join the military, although she no longer has the naivety she once had as a child, she still wishes to protect the people that she can.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Swordsmanship and Horseback Riding
Having learned swordsmanship and horseback riding from Major General Douner, who is well known for his abilities in the fields, Marjorie can be said to be quite good at them though the old man would never admit that.
Magic
Coming from a poor family, Marjorie never had the chance to learn magic and by the time she was picked up by the Major General she had passed the best age for learning and he had no intention of finding her a teacher at the risk of her life when he could teach her other things.

Virtues & Personality perks

Loyalty and Reliability
Although her city was abandoned by her country in its time of need and looks down on its government, she holds a loyalty to the people: to protect and serve them unlike those before her. To those she looks up to or has taken as a friend, she is extremely loyal. If they are in need she will surely help them in whatever way she can.
Assertiveness and Authenticity
Marjorie doesn't hesitate to voice her thoughts and opinions even when she may be the odd one out. In the early years of her military career her naivety was quite obvious and earned her the ridicule of her peers and superiors. As a seasoned veteran she no longer has that childish naivety but maintains these characteristics.
Modesty and Understanding
Although she has gained power and fame, she does not flaunt them and remains humble. To those who are less off than her, she is caring and does not look down upon them for she knows their struggles.

Vices & Personality flaws

Impatience and Recklessness
When she has her mind set on something, Marjorie can be quite adamant in seeing it through, even if others disagree. To some degree, being in the military helps to reign this in lest she is let go for insubordination. Perhaps if she took the time to stop and think about what she was planning to do it wouldn't be that big of a problem but unfortunately, she tends to act immediately without thinking things through.

Personality Quirks

Marjorie is very expressive when it comes to body language. With her emotions being so easily read she earned the nickname 'Open Book' while in the military.

Hygiene

She doesn't put much thought into the state of her appearance, often going out with a head of unkempt hair and clothes covered in dirt and filled with holes. Many times she'll forget to bathe, coming from a poor background and serving most of her military life out on the field has mad such things a luxury.   Just about the only time she'll take care of her cleanliness is for official events but even then it done reluctantly, seen as a bother. The only things she really takes care of are her horse, sword, and armor, making sure that they are clean and in good condition.

Social

Family Ties

After her family died in the Cirmont Massacre Marjorie has no blood relatives left, however, she considers Major General Curt Douner as a father figure as he took her in and raised her.

Social Aptitude

Charismatic and a good leader, she is able to gather the respect and cooperation of the troops under her. Though she can be harsh when it comes to discipline, she means well and her care and attention to others is easily seen.   Unfortunately, when it comes to her temper, she can be a bit rash, quickly acting on her emotions when able and not sparing a word when it comes to saying whats on her mind even when the other party is someone of higher rank.

Speech

Coming from a poor background and practically growing up in the military, Marjorie's words have no tact or eloquence. Someone from a cultured background may find her way of speech rather harsh and jarring but it helps her meld with the troops, many of whom do not come from such well-off families.

Wealth & Financial state

Most of the money she earns in the military goes into keeping her equipment well maintained. A good portion of the rest is donated to an orphanage. She doesn't have much desire for luxuries so the amount she spends for herself is quite small. Instead, she'll often treat her friends and comrades to a good meal when they stop in the cities.
