Avrella

Created by

Avrella is an ancient land, believed to have been created by the four original dragons at the beginning of time. These dragons shape the land -- they built the mountains, sculpted the valleys, and wove the rivers that run through Avrella even into the present day. And though they were the first to give magic to the world, like all things, their power waned over time, ushering in an age of new gods, a time known as the Great Dawn. Liluna, the first goddess, is believed to have brought light into the world, and her children, Heleyna and Zoriella, became pillars for shadow and sunlight alike.   The world is predominantly separated into two continents: Emeris and Vidrela. Most continental land is ruled by a specific kingdom, but there are some disputed territories that have evaded their rule. Most of these territories are older, and have pre-established independent rule that has (so far) resisted being occupied or absorbed by one of the larger kingdoms.   According to legend, the two continents were formed by the fallen hero Helekai who, fearing war, split Avrella in two: Emeris, the land of light, and Vidrela, the land of shadow. The sun did not set in Emeris, nor did it rise in Vidrela. When Helekai died, no one was able to maintain this magic, and each continent returned to a normal sunrise/sunset cycle.   Today, life in Avrella continues goes on, though the threat of war is still fresh on everyone's mind -- it was only a mere 30 years ago that a mysterious group of heroes prevented such a calamity. Many of the issues that caused these conflicts remain still. Industrialization spreads unevenly through the kingdoms, creating poor distributions of wealth. Divine magic users are dwindling, and few are trained enough in wizardry to understand arcane magic. The Dragon Riders, peacekeepers of the land, are at odds with each other. And nearly all kingdoms fear invasion from one neighbor or another, desperate to expand their influence and power across the continent (and for some, even the seas).
