Avress, the Shattered World
1 Patching, 1204 AC
Long ago, the world of Avress was torn apart as magic everywhere became unstable and dangerous. The civilized nations of the continent of Taigash were besieged by demonic armies and hordes of undead. Then, as the fighting reached its height, an event known as the Cataclysm tore the world asunder. Cities exploded. Rifts to the planes opened throughout the land to spill forth destruction and chaos. Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Hurricanes and other natural disasters all occured simultaneously. When it was over, Taigash was left completely uninhabitable.
Survivors fled to the "new world", the continent of Beltiar. For centuries, the refugees there struggled to hold onto some semblance of civilization as they settled in various regions and fought to survive in a dangerous, unstable world. This time was known as the Age of Survival.
Nations grew from these humble beginnings and spread throughout Beltiar, pushing back hostile natives and solidifying their control of the land. As magic became stable again, temples were rebuilt and arcane practitioners reclaimed their power to the benefit of mortal-kind. This time was known as the Age of Expansion.
It is now the year 1204 AC and we have entered a new age, the Age of Progress. Technological wonders in the fields of Alchemy, Medicine, Enchanting, and Arcane Theory have led to advancements that make life better for everyone. But all is not rosy and sweet. There is still darkness in the land and many oracles are predicting terrible things to come once more.
