Artistic City of Plátno

The city is like a living mosaic. Each life that enters this city adds something of their own to it before moving on. And by add something, I mean tangible artwork.

Overview

Plátno is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Východ and the city is located on the Kopí Peninsula. Since The Recovery, it has been known as the artistic capital of the Continental Island of Lluvia and even of the Quassus Continent. As far as being the artistic capital of the continent is concerned, the Free City of Centrum aims to dispute that claim.   Platno is easily recognized by being built atop a narrow peninsula as well as its strikingly painted buildings. Each building has been treated as a canvas where artists of various reputes have lent their skills for the purposes of decoration.   Economically, the city builds its wealth through the trading of dyes, salts, and coffee. Artwork is also traded, though the city guards its most impressive creations much to the annoyance of others who covets such creations.

Coffee Culture

Thanks to Eliska's Fields near the entrance of the Uzký Trail, the citizens of Platno enjoys and experiments with that exotic beverage- coffee. Several coffeehouses can be found in the city. Each coffeehouse offers their own specialty brew, and this is likely the cause of competition between the houses. While the city has built a reputation for showing how coffee can be enjoyed in various exotic ways, the standard bean-only beverage is enjoyed by nearly all citizens in mornings and in afternoons.

Art Culture

Platno citizens like to paint. They also like to make plays. They also like to write poetry. While other settlements have their own art community, Platno is home to particularly skilled artisans.   A painting auction held annually within the city square. It is claimed that the most expensive pieces of art- and some of the most exclusive- are traded in this event. This event may soon have strong competition from the increasingly wealthy Free City-State of Centrum.   Plays are hosted in several indoor and outdoor theaters around the city. These plays range from tragedies to epics. One of the most popular plays claims to recount the gripping events that led to the The Great Collapse. The accuracy of that play is dubious at best, and there is debate as to its original playwright.   A poetry competition is also held annually.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

The painters in Platno will paint on anything. Canvas, streets, buildings, even cloaks. I challenged one during my visit and they actually pulled it off. Was a pretty good painting too. At least I think so, abstract imagery was never my forte. - Archivists Rena   Do you still have the cloak? I want to see it. - Archivist Savitri   I do. Pinned it to my bedroom wall the other day. - Archivist Rena
