Dragons

If beings such as Humans, Elves, and Dwarves dominated the past, then it is the dragons who truly dominate our present. - Bubba Rez, Zoologist.

Overview

The true nature of dragons are said to be unknowable to mortals. Those who have stood within the presence of one have described a presence that is undeniable and terrifying. They represent the apex predator of the world, hunting what they will and when they desire. That includes both food and treasures, and it seems that every dragon is unduly impressed by the resurrection of "civilization" and all its concerns and ambitions. Dragons are not to be confused with wyverns, wvyrms, or other such creatures.

History

It is unclear if dragons existed in the old world of the Ancients. Recovered documents and imagery so far have not included dragons, which is odd considering that such powerful beings would most certainly have generated tremendous interest. This has led to some positing that dragons may had arrived after the collapse, or had arrived during the calamity.

Dragon Archetypes

Several kinds of dragons have been spotted: Red, Blue, Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each kind has their own special abilities. For example, red dragons are best known for their fire breath.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Their appearance is that of an enormous reptile with four legs, a long tail, a long neck, and expansive wings.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Most dragons hunt large herds to satisfy their nutrition requirements. Most will not hunt any sentient species (such as Elves and Gnomes) partly because such a meal is not the easiest option, and partly because the meat of a sentient species is not of "delectable quality." However, there are instances where dragons have eaten those who sought to slay them.   Meat is not the only thing dragons will eat. Plenty of dragons have been seen eating various plants that bear fruits or vegetables. In fact, where the person may not make a good meal for a dragon their crops are a different story. A few farmers who are largely isolated from settlements have set aside a "dragon field" as preparation for a possible visit.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragons make superior use of the five recognized senses. Their sense of sight is penetrating, their sense of smell is precise, their sense of hearing is keen, their sense of touch is unerring, and their sense of taste is discerning.   It is said that dragons are able to make use of sense beyond those five, but as to what they are they will not say.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

Has anyone here ever met a dragon? Sounds like it would be an awesome experience. - Archivist Enna   I thought so too, before meeting the platinum dragon. Nothing written can hope to capture their majesty. - Archivist Taenya Naïlo Can you share more about that experience? I think all of use would like to know more. - Archivist Enna It would be difficult to convey the intricacies of talking to such a dragon without having been a part of such an encounter. - Archivist Taenya   Are you saying that I have to meet a dragon before I can talk about it with you? - Archivist Enna   Yes. I mislead you otherwise. - Archivist Taenya
