Sun Prime Eligius Jargal

Arguably the single man responsible for Helia's imperial ambition. Who knows what the histories of Avistar or the Rossa Alliance would be if not for the Eligius Interpretation.
— Alicia Raven, Historian

Overview

Eligius Jargal was the Sun Prime of The Temple of Helios of the Kingdom of Helia from 1001AGC to his death in 1027AGC. In this position, he held supreme authority over the issuing of religious edicts for the country.

An Infamous Interpretation

Elgius posited and argued vehemently for the idea that the texts of his religion described a great destiny for the people who could give the greatest offerings to Helios. This Interpretation, pushed for in 1013AGC, led to the Kingdom's zealous pursuit of imperialism as a means to increase the greatness of the Radiant City of Sol. The greater Sol's glory, the greater the offering it could be to the sun god.

A Difference of Opinion

While the upper strata of Helian Society greatly approved of Eligius' interpretation of religious doctrine, most of the rest of Helian society were apprehensive of it. Many, including several other priests, had argued that to accept Eligius' interpretation at face value would lead the Kingdom to ruin even if the short-term gains were great. These dissenting voices were silenced in one way or another. Most were convinced to change their minds when Sol grew many times its former strength after each successful conquest. Some were disposed of more directly through assassinations, banishment, or ex-communications. Today, those who still have reservations seem to keep to themselves for fear of reprisal for them, their friends, and family.

A Sudden Death

Before the new year could be ushered in, Eligius' body was discovered dead in his home to the surprise of many in 1127AGC. A poisoned dart found in both eyes, or so the story goes. His killer was believed to be a Lunarian Assassin known only as Sabra. According to official Kingdom declarations, she had been apprehended and executed within the dungeons of the Radiant Palace. It is believed that Sabra had killed Eligius in response to his Interpretation. Eligius' death allowed Helia to consider him a martyr, and to drum up more support for the Kingdom's newfound want for expansion.   There are whispers that the Kingdom never caught Eligius' killer, and that she remains at large (Drows can live a long life). Some posit that the assassin may not have been Lunarian at all.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

If Sabra could kill the highest religious authority in Helia, she could have killed any of its Kings as well. Why didn't she? - Archivist Enna   One theory is that the assassin, for we do not know that Sabra had ordered the assassination, had a personal score to settle with Eligius that had little to do with his Interpretation. - Archivist Taenya Naïlo
