Overview
A Horned Revenant is a fearsome undead creature, a once-proud warrior cursed to rise again after death. These twisted beings are driven by a relentless need for vengeance, hunting down those they hold responsible for their cursed existence. Recognisable by the massive, jagged horns that grow from their skulls, these Revenants wield dark energy and are feared for the curses they cast upon their victims. Its hollow eyes glow with hatred and its rusted weapons are still deadly in its decaying hands. It is said that this creature can only be truly destroyed by shattering its horns.
Appearance
A Horned Revenant appears as it did in life, with all of its armour and weaponry. However, it is undead, and so its body will show signs of decay. Its armour and weapons are rusted and pitted. Both will show the signs of the battle in which it died. Gouges reveal bone beneath the torn, rotten flesh. The Revenant's eyes are hollow sockets that glow faintly with a flickering, dark light. The dark energy that drives the Revenant. However, what gives it is name are the unnatural, blackened horns that have grown from its skull. These horns are jagged and twisted, growing in unnatural directions. They pulse subtly with a malevolent energy, acting as the source of the Revenant's power.
Origins
There are many theories as to how a Horned Revenant is formed. Some think that a ritual was cast on a warrior before a battle, either unknowingly or deliberately, unaware of the possibility that his curse could come to fruition. Some believe they are simply formed when a warrior suffers an intense betrayal, either directly on the battlefield or a victim of dishonorable tactics. This injustice is what brings them back to seek out the source of said betrayal. It is presumed that some kind of pact may be made upon death with an agent of the Planes of Sin, likely a Devil of Wrath.
Behaviour & Abilities
A Horned Revenant wants only one thing: the death of the individual or individuals that betrayed them. They are more than willing to go through anyone who stands in their way on their path to their ultimate target. If one values their life, it is best to not get in their way, if possible. The longer its hunt last, the more irrational it will behave, and it will become just as likely to lash out the innocent as well as the guilty. Though its body is decayed, the Revenant retains the strength it had in life, bolstered by the dark energy that drives it. That same dark energy is capable of instilling fear in targets that meet the Revenant's gaze, plaguing them with hallucinations of loved one's betraying them, sharing the pain of the Revenant in some way.
It cannot be easily destroyed either. It is resilient to many forms of physical damage, and will regenerate its broken body over time, rising again to continue its hunt. Only by shattering its horns can the Revenant be fully killed, severing the dark magic that tethers it to the mortal world again.
