History
Historically, the Lawkeepers were a purely human organisation but following the Cataclysm War, the Dwarves and Gnomes of Aldenia adopted the organisation and titles as part of the unification effort. The Elves, whilst part of the effort, did not and remain with their own system of law enforcement. As a result Aldenia has three Lawkeeper Generals, one for each species. The human settlement of Ellaluna in the Couvalon Kingdom of northern Suriima also operates with the Lawkeeper organisation. In the Old Tongue, the title of Lawkeeper General is referred to as Ordum Prima (Master of Order), though in some of the oldest surviving texts, it is written 'Odum' rather than 'Ordum', like the god of law and order.The Role
The Lawkeeper General for the Humans in Aldenia will typically also hold the post of Minister of Order in Dawnstone. Likewise, the other Generals will hold equivalent posts in their own societies. The Lawkeeper General is an appointed position, chosen by the current Monarch or ruler within their respective, so for instance the King of the Humans will appoint the Lawkeeper General for the humans. It is a lifetime position following appointment, meaning only death, retirement or dismissal from the role are the only ways of losing the position. As a result, post-Cataclysm, in the relative peace since, the individuals chosen, whilst usually into their respective middle ages when appointed, typically stay in power for a significant period of time. The role of Lawkeeper General is the ultimate authority (apart from the monarch) in maintaining order within their society. All prospective pass through them for approval before the final decision is made by the monarch. Since the position is chosen by the monarch in the first place, by and large, the monarch's final approval is usually aligned with the Lawkeeper General's. For the most part, the Lawkeeper General is not involved in the street level crime fighting but rather deals with the larger scale initiatives within their society. It is also not particularly an administrative role. However, since they usually also hold the position of Minister of Order (or equivalent), those duties can be.Current Lawkeeper Generals
