Overview
The Home for Disenfranchised Youths is an children's home located in
Brinewatch. It was set up by
Oban Dartell and the home is often referred to with his name preceding it, even though it's not its official name. Dartell himself, through this enterprise and his endeavours earned him the moniker 'The Urchin Lord'.
Appearance & Layout
Due to the compact nature of Brinewatch, with its narrow winding streets and a population that's ever growing, The Home for Disenfranchised Youths is one of the largest buildings in the town, and one of a select few that is wider than it is tall. It has a large garden at the rear, the space at the front is nothing more than a performative buffer from the bustling streets. It is a three story structure, where the bottom floor is dedicated to the function rooms for the operation, the middle floor is the accommodation for the children, and the top floor is for the live-in staff, and notably, Dartell himself.
The Work
The facility currently sees around 100 children call it home. Since its more likely a child will find themselves without parents or a home, the older they are, the cohort's age does skew towards the latter teens. However, there are children of all ages at The Home. Children 'graduate' from The Home at the start of the summer after they have turned 18. Oban Dartell personally dedicates time each year to check in with previous years' graduates, to make sure they are on the right path and to provide further assistance if necessary, even though they are no longer under his roof. The children under his, and his staff's, care are given plenty of food, an education and an array of tradeskills, if they so desire.
Silent Shadows
Due to Oban Dartell's work for
The Silent Shadows, occasionally he would identify a suitable candidate to induct into that organisation. Such individuals of recent years include
Katakeleo Galadonel,
August Truemore and Pearl Hearst (upon the suggestion of Katakeleo, as it happens, effectively making her a grand-initiate, in a sense).
Dartell's Death
Oban Dartell was found dead, at his desk, in 585PC, having seemingly passed away in his sleep the night after a graduate check-in. He was found by one of those graduate, Pearl Hearst. Due to his service to the town, he was honored with a lying-in-state period. His deputy at The Home, Turain Stonefist has taken over the management duties.
