The Lundhearst Miasma

While not a ritual that's celebrated, it is an event that happens, chronically, every day within the walls of Lundhearst and is well known throughout the world.   Each day, when the sun rises, a pink fog spreads through the streets and filters into every crack, every home, and through any fabric. No mask, filter or otherwise, can halt its effects, and even magic is unable to stop the miasma and its effects.   A short while after the inevitable ingestion, the victim begins to hallucinate and is filled with a slight euphoria, as if everything is alright. The broken, dreary streets of Lundhearst suddenly seem alive and vibrant...Its citizens are lively and hospitable, suddenly willing to engage with a friendly 'Good day!' attitude. No longer are windows busted or corpses slumped underneath a lamppost, yet increasingly subtle nods indicate something may be awry. This drugged-like state comes with slight memory loss and prolonged, light dizziness. While the victim is able to remember their name, most everything else is a blur and a welcome one due to the newfound 'fuzzy feelings' inside.   A child may play with a doll who is missing an arm, and, instead, has an actual bleeding stump. Petting a dog may have the hand feel a tumor sized lump on its back haunch. A fish sold at the market may have a distinct, rotted, acidic taste, and a common phrase uttered near sunset daily is "Make sure to lock your doors and sleep tight! You don't wanna be out when the boogeymen are wandering, do ya? Heh....Heh...Heh..." creating this unsettling feeling at the base of one's neck.   Despite this, any unrest is not tolerated. Indicating something could be wrong will lead to willing ignorance and verbal dismissal.
"Oh, the kid's playing with a bleeding doll again? I swear, I don't know where they get those toys sometimes. Wanna come in and try a nice pie?"
Further pushback will create a sharp turn in public demeanor. Citizens will grow agitated and outright violent, even brutally attacking the person that dare suggest things are not well, and other citizens are quick to rally, creating a mindless mob, unable to be reasoned with, with the singular intent to kill.   When night settles in and the miasma wears off, a slight groggy feeling akin to waking up overtakes the body. Coupled with being able to see Lundhearst for the vile and broken shamble that it is, as well as the flooding back of memories once forgotten, and it can create a very jarring effect on the mind.   Worse still, submitting to the miasma habitually creates dissonance on reality, as it's difficult to differentiate between which is reality and which is the nightmare...the gentle sun over homes and people quietly living out their lives, or the dark night wrought with eldritch horrors and terrible abominations?

Participants

All beings within the gates of Lundhearst (and those very close to the gates) are affected each day. Some surrounding areas experience a second hand effect of the dwindling fog, often resulting in feelings of despair and misery were someone to settle close by.

Observance

The fog fills the air as the morning sun rises and the effects wear off an hour after sunset.

Great artwork here, and I also like the idea of an old fashioned Victorian term like 'miasma' making its way into a homebrew world...
