Mayor of Ketra

The Mayor of Ketra is a position that has little to no belief in it on the part of the people. It is common knowledge that all the mayors have been puppets of Keizl, who is the true leader of Ketra. The rumor is that Keizl pays well, though it's never been proven - perhaps because no one's been brave enough to dig into the whole affair.

Qualifications

The candidate needs to be a Lord and hold lands in Ketra. They need to have lived in Ketra for more than fifteen years. They need to be able to travel.

Requirements

They must have a "clean reputation" in the eyes of the city council.

Appointment

The Mayor is voted in on a Thursday and sworn in the following Monday in a special ceremony that doesn't generate much attendance due to the people's apathy towards the position. The Mayor's Parade, however, is much looked forward to by everyone in town. The newly appointed mayor rides at the front of the parade and there are floats depicting his ancestors' deeds and candy and firecrackers are handed out to children.

Duties

The mayor shall serve as the chief executive officer of the city, performing executive responsibilities by monitoring the activities of the administrator and the various departments of city government to see that city ordinances and country laws are enforced. This requires knowledge of city ordinances and country laws and a procedure for monitoring municipal activities. The mayor shall serve as the policy leader for the community, providing policy information and recommendations to the council. The mayor shall preside over the city council. The mayor shall vote in the event of a tie vote by the council. The mayor shall have the authority to veto ordinances passed by the council. The mayor shall serve as the chief representative of the city in relations with newspapers and printers. The mayor shall represent the city in meetings with and presentations to other governmental units, businesses, community groups, and other groups. The mayor shall work with residents of the community in receiving their comments and complaints and seeking appropriate responses, in conjunction with the administrator and, if desired, the council. The mayor shall perform any other duties not specified here that are defined in city codes.

Responsibilities

Leads city council meetings; plans city budgets; manages fire, guard, and waste management, such as it is, for the city; and manage city projects with Keizl's input.

Benefits

The Mayor is paid a salary from the city coffers. There is a rumor the Mayor also receives money from Keizl but this has never been substantiated.

The city charter created the Mayor position in 1667.

Cultural Significance

In most other cities, the Mayor is a well-respected person who generally gets the job done. In Ketra, the Mayor is a puppet of Keizl, the leader of the Bonespite Clan. No one respects the Mayor of Ketra, although he fulfills an important role in managing city finances and projects.
