The Iron Queen
The Iron Queen is a tavern/inn in the city of Ketra, in the country of Shotark, on the Western Continent of Cheron, on the world of Ayora. The Iron Queen is frequented by many different sorts of patrons, from soldiers and mercenaries, to merchants and visiting dignitaries. It is a favorite tavern of Greta, the protagonist, who drinks and gambles here.
Purpose / Function
The tavern is designed with two purposes in mind: an inn on the upper two floors and a tavern on the main floor.
Design
When a patron first enters the tavern, the fireplace is to their left and the bar straight ahead. The stage is to the right, lit with braziers that also keep the performers warm. There are tables all around the large room, as well as comfortable chairs around the fireplace. Behind the bar is the kitchen. To the right of the kitchen and the bar are the stairs leading up to the inn. On the second story, the inn desk greets customers when they walk up the stairs. The rooms lead back in two hallways to the left and the right. On the third story, there are only rooms.
Entries
There is a front door that leads out to the street. It is a solid wood door, flanked by two huge glass windows. There is a back door out of the kitchen that leads into the alley. There are exit-only doors from the second and third floors that lead down steps to the alley.
Sensory & Appearance
Smell: delicious food cooking, such as stew and roast and freshly baked bread; people in close proximity; fresh air off the street when the door is opened. See: lots of people engaged in various activities; servers in homespun linen; wooden tables and chairs; stone walls. Feel: warm air from the fireplace and crowd; cold mug of ale; hard chair and table; cool metal utensils. Hear: voices raised, usually in racuous laughter; mugs clinking; music playing.
Alterations
The third story was added in 1845, when Serl Lanfir bought the tavern.
Architecture
The outside of the tavern is stone with rough-hewn wood. There are two chimneys visible from outside - the side and the back. There are large windows in the front of the building, allowing a view of the street. The outside is well-maintained. The inside of the main floor has the following: a large L-shaped bar, small tables to sit at, a large stone fireplace, and a small stage area.
History
The Iron Queen has been around for nearly sixty years. The current owner bought the tavern 35 years ago and has made improvements, including adding a third story which doubled the amount of rooms for rent.
Tourism
People come to the Iron Queen to eat a delicious meal and to drink. The tavern is often crowded and warm, a nice contrast to the cold weather outside. The staff is friendly and fast. The clientele are mostly happy. It is loud and there is lots of gambling going on - cards and dice, mainly. There is music nearly every evening.
