Altmyr
Properties
Material Characteristics
The appearance of a lightly polished stone in a mid-range gray hue, flecked throughout by other materials or impurities.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Altmyr channels magic quite well once it has been refined and the impurities removed. In its raw form, it still channels magic, though the impurities cause interference and a decreased rate of channeling.
Geology & Geography
Origin & Source
When the Inara volcano erupted in Year 204, the sorcerers Aidan Seeker and Eryn Watcher set out to destroy the mountain before it could kill everyone in their village. After years of education and building an army of sorcerers, they were able to vanquish the mountain using a spell that changed the molten rock within it into stone. The magic woven into the spell resulted in a substance that was not quite stone, yet not quite metal ore either.
History & Usage
Discovery
The sorcerer Aidan Seeker discovered the latent properties of the material when visiting the volcano a few years after its destruction. Eryn Watcher, with help from the blacksmith Brandor, later refined the material and determined its magical properties.
Everyday use
Altmyr is commonly used by mages in weapons and armor to assist them in battle. Other sorcerers use it in experimentation.
Refinement
Almyr can be used in its ore form, but it is most useful after having been refined to remove impurities.
Manufacturing & Products
Common uses for Altmyr include swords, daggers, and chainmail, though it can be used in countless products used for magical purposes.
Distribution
Trade & Market
Because it is only found in one mine in the Alta Mountains, near Inara, Berk is the nation that profits most from Altmyr. It is mined as an export to all countries where magic is valued in warfare. Mining is challenging, as the material is difficult to break apart in ore form, and impossible to transport in large, boulder-like pieces.
