In 1848, the Silbers family started searching for a partner for Joël to marry. One of their main goals was to secure benefits for both families. Esther Muller received a modest dowry after her father's passing, and her foster parents suggested marrying Esther to Joël in exchange for a portion of that dowry. The Silbers agreed to the proposal, and the match between Joël and Esther was arranged. The couple spent several months together to get to know each other, although it was challenging and awkward for them.
