Lithinvora (Lih-thin-vor-ah)
The Parasitic Hunters
Lithinvora Aeterai, commonly known as "Lithins", are a race of parasitic, venomous Desmiva who were created to cull those who indulged far too much in their sins. They are considered one of the most monstrous species of Desmiva out there, even compared to the other Desmivan races. This is because Lithins are animavorous, and feed off of the very souls of their prey. Any who resist change and let their sins overtake them are considered fair game to these fierce hunters.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Lithinvora are bipedal, digitigrade creatures that are humanoid in appearance. On average, they are one of the taller species on Ayvenfael, rivaled only by the Drükavir. Both male and female Lithins are naturally muscular and possess carnivorous-style teeth and sharp talons upon their hands and feet. They have curved horns on the top of their head, and smaller facial horns upon their jawline.
Genetics and Reproduction
Lithins go through a singular mating season during the first week of the autumn season. Mating between Lithins typically does not involve any sense of romantic courtship, as long-term companionship is a rarity among their kind. During this mating season, Lithins become far more aggressive and territorial. Males must not only compete with other males for breeding rights but must also prove themselves to females in a show of strength. If a female is receptive to a male, she will allow the male to bite her neck to hold her while mating takes place. However, if she finds a male to not be worthy, she will kill them without hesitation.
After a successful conception, a gravid Lithin will typically carry a clutch of 3 - 6 eggs within them for 8 months, before creating a nest to lay them in within the Sire's territory. Any other females that the Sire may have copulated with will lay their eggs in the same area.
Lithin nesting grounds are typically in volcanic environments, as Lithin eggs require a lot of heat to incubate properly.
Newborn Lithinvora are born with all their teeth, and it does not take long for their feeding instinct to kick in. After experiencing their first meal, young Lithins will possess small animals to devour their souls, until they are strong enough to target bigger prey. Upon reaching adolescence, most animal souls will no longer supply enough sustainable energy to quell a Lithin's hunger.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The terrifying nature of their very creation, the dietary needs of a Lithin are considered monstrous and horrifying to the other races, even by other Desmiva. This is because a Lithin must gain energy and sustain themselves by devouring souls. There are two main methods of feeding that Lithins will employ.
The first provides quick bursts of energy but is by far the most gruesome. A Lithin will hunt their prey down, often envenoming them to pacify them so that they are unable to fight back. Then, the Lithin will hook its essence into the victim's soul, forcing their heart to continue beating while they are devoured alive. Upon reaching the heart of their prey, the Lithin will devour the soul in whole, and leave what remains of the carcass to rot.
The second method is much slower but provides Lithins the benefit of not needing to feed as often. This involves a Lithin possessing a host, gradually feeding upon their prey's soul to maintain a steady amount of energy. Most Lithins will hibernate for long periods of time in order to conserve energy and only rouse to either protect their host or to hunt large prey.
