Code of Durian

Of all of the gods, Durian is the god of law. They are the most concerned with law, and how law is used every day amongst their followers. 

The majority of Paragons who are faithful, are the faithful of Durian.

Durian's church, in many cases, is the most popular and the most organized church in the many and varied settlements of the Realm. Its structures are carefully organized, structured and developed through careful consideration of the law. Durian's priests, priestess, live and breath the law as it informs every aspect of their lives and by extension the lives of their devoted followers.
Followers of Durian typically have a condensed version of the Code slipped away in a pocket. This way when they are uncertain about if something they are considering is a Code violation they have the most common sections of the Code on hand. 
The clergy of Durian are also renowned scholars of law in general. While Durian's Code is the spiritual law that they follow, the law of the Realm is equally important and demands their attention and study. Durian's Code requires it. 
This expertise in the law means that many citizens seek the advise of the clergy of Durian and in return donate an amount of money to the church as an expression of their gratitude. It is common for the churches of Durian to be well kept and well funded.

Purpose

The Code of Durian sets forth the proper and right ways to be faithful. Contained within the Code are simple directives to help the lay person live well, instructions on proper ritual practice, and for the clergy, clear directives on how to manage the great Church of Durian.

Historical Details

Background

Through Orodam, The Voice Durian spoke his Code to the those most faithful. These faithful transcribed the Code, and the Code was the Code. The Code shapes the lives of the faithful providing guidance to ensure their spiritual health and physical well being.
It was from this moment, that the presence of Durian entered the Realm.

Term

The Code of Durian is reaffirmed by the Council of High Clergy in the Ceremony of Reading every century. During this ceremony the entire Code is read out loud without interruption and at the same time re-transcribed.
It is through this most holy of ritual that the blessing of Durian is maintained and his Code sanctified for the next century. Once the ceremony is complete the previous transcription of the Code is considered heretical.

On that which can be eaten

Clean and Unclean Animals
Durain said unto Orodram,

Speak unto the faithful: Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: You may eat of any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews not of the flesh. Some that only chew not of the flesh or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are uncivilized for you.

Of all the creatures living in the water of the Realm you may eat any that have fins, scales, or tentacles. But all creatures in the waters that do not have these things whether among all or among all the other living creatures in the water-you are to regard as uncivilized. And since you are to regard them as uncivilized, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as uncivilized.

These are the birds you are to regard as uncivilized and not eat; the raptor of any kind, any kind of dove, the owl, the cormorant, the osprey, the stork, any kind of heron, the dodo and the flying squirrel.

When one of the uncivilized animals dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be uncivilized. Put the item in water; it will be uncivilized till evening, and then it will be civilized.

None of the faithful shall eat of any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is uncivilized.

Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves uncivilized by means of them or be made uncivilized by them. I am Durian your god; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves uncivilized. This is the Code concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground. You must distinguish between the uncivilized and the civilized, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.
