The Olokushi

The Olokushi is the ruler of the Kingdom of Selatra, and the current reincarnation of the original Olokushi. Theoretically posessing absolute power, the Olokushi is nonetheless constrained by tradition and the Kingdom's infamously dense court politics.

Appointment

Upon the death of the previous Olokushi, celestial signs, odd weather patterns, and other divine portents will guide the members of the Palace of Memories to the location of a newborn naga child, the body that the Olokushi has most recently incarnated into. While the Palace of Memories is aware as soon as they find the new Olokushi, neither the child themselves nor the Kingdom at large are made aware until the child turns ten years old, at which point they will be moved into their new home and begin training for their duties.   While the Olokushi has all of their powers from this moment until their death, it is customary for them to avoid any major decisions outside of emergencies until they have spent another ten years studying statecraft in the Eternal Archive and reading the Unending Records. As reincarnations of Olokushi, every Olokushi will have a natural propensity for these skills, but must still refresh them.

Duties

The role of the Olokushi is to safeguard the people of Selatra both physically and spiritually, continuing the promise of the original Olokushi to protect her people for as long as they needed her. They are to be apart from any political cause save that of Selatra as a whole, and since the adoption of Meshaism, the Olokushi is also responsible for keeping pilgrimage routes safe.

Responsibilities

While the day-to-day business of administration in Selatra is largely handled by the bureaucracy, the Olokushi remains the absolute ruler, in charge of managing any changes made to and problems that disrupt the bureaucracy. They are responsible for budget allocation, approving government building and trade projects, they are diplomatic head of the kingdom, and the head of the army and navy.   Less officially, much of the Olokushi's role is de-escalating conflicts and resolving disputes among the many officials of the government and with the Mesa Dun, keeping peace within the government.
