Hands of Maion
Founded by a group of devout Maionene laypeople, the Hands of Maion is a charitable organization with a network spread across Polira. The underlying principle of the organization is that people can atone for the sin of humankind through good works towards their fellows. They are primarily known for providing food and shelter to the itinerant, but they also collect clothing and tools for the needy, and even give job referrals when they have them.
Hands of Maion started as a small kitchen charity. Four neighbors who were both devout and concerned with the well-being of others came together and started cooking large amounts of soup, which they dished out to any in need near the local Temple. Others joined them, the scope of their mission expanded, and a name was chosen.
Soon, nearby towns were starting their own chapters of the Hands of Maion, and within five years, there was need to start a kingdom-wide network to coordinate everything. Founder Phil Bittencourt stepped up to be Chairperson of the new organization. Within ten years' time, the Hands of Maion were a household name, and the bastion that all other charities longed to be.
The volunteer organization relies solely on charitable donations of coin as well as food, clothing, and other needed materials. It is funded by individuals, workplaces, and guilds, but not the Maionene Temple itself. Although it tacitly approves of the actions of the Hands of Maion, and does not forbid clergy from volunteering in their off-time, there is no official Temple sanction of the charity.
This is due to a conflict of dogma, wherein the Temple teaches that forgiveness and atonement can only be sought through official rituals or private prayer. The notion that acts of charity can also be a route to forgiveness is counter to the Temple's teachings. Despite the lack of blessings from the Temple, the Hands of Maion is still the province of the devout, for they have not been officially condemned, either.
