Aarakocra
Current Month: Julwar 2nd: 209, The Fifth Age
Not much is known about this strange species of avian humanoids. From another world, it is unknown how they have been arriving on Azure, whether it be portal or ship.
Aarakocra resemble humanoid birds. The average specimen stand about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and have a wingspan of 20 feet (6.1 meters). Halfway along the edge of each wing is a hand with three human-sized fingers and an opposable thumb. An elongated fourth finger extends the length of the wing and locked in place during flight. The hands cannot grasp while flying, but they are nearly as useful as human hands when an Aarakocra is perched and its wings are folded back.
Their powerful legs end in four sharp talons that can unlock and fold back to reveal another pair of functional hands. These humanoids have hollow, fragile bones. Their faces combine the features of both parrots and eagles. They have gray-black beaks and black eyes. Plumage color varies, but males generally have red, orange, and yellow coloration, while females tend towards brown and gray.
Aarakocra are generally peaceful creatures who cherish their solitude. They are known to be extremely claustrophobic.
Male Aarakocra tend to have very short tempers and have been known to fly into fits of rage when a perceived wrong occurred. They are also notorious romantic flirts, regardless of whether or not they were married.
Since Aarakocra avoid melee combat when possible, their combat tactics revolve around attacking opponents from above. Javelins are the weapon of choice for many aarakocra, so much so that they have developed their own unique type of javelin called a flight lance.
A single Aarakocra can comfortably carry up to six javelins at a time, stored in a special sheathe that is strapped to its body. Other weapons used by Aarakocra include darts and daggers. Their sharp talons and beaks are effective weapons as well.
Occasionally they wear studded leather, but they never use shields.
Not much is knwon about Aarakocra society due to their rarity, and those known tend to keep to themselves. What is known is that Aarakocra prefer to live in high places such as mountains and cliffsides. Females tend to be the leaders in Aarakocra bands, as society deemed them far more controlled emotionally. Males are not forbidden from authority positions, but it is a rare occurance.
Aarakocra seem to worship the "winged beings of light and sky", some speculate this may be undescended Vanir.
Aarakocra avoid contact with other species, and many individuals rarely, if ever, leave their home territories.
Aarakocra understand and speak common, but when they speak it, they punctuate their speech with caws, whistles, and other bird-like sounds.
