Gaslight Lamplighter
Gaslight Lamplighters were skilled professionals, playing a crucial role in illuminating the streets and alleys of towns and cities all over the world. They were armed with long poles and ladders, traversing the streets at dusk to ignite the gas-powered streetlamps of the city streets. Their presence was particularly noticeable in the urban areas of the world, where gas lighting was the common method of street illumination. Since the development of electric lighting, and the centralized methods of igniting them, the demand for Gaslight Lamplighters is steadily declining. Today, only small towns without electricity need these professionals.
Career
Qualifications
Aspiring Gaslight Lamplighters need a combination of practical skills and mystical understanding. They had to be physically fit, because of the position of Gaslights in the streets, they had to be technically versatile, to solve upcoming problems with the streetlights, and they had to understand, how this kind of light works – and what effects their work has on people within a city.
To gain these skills, they underwent an apprenticeship of two years, learning the technical aspects of their craft, but also delving into the arcane arts, to understand the magical disturbances and supernatural phenomena that could affect the functionality of the street illumination.
Another essential skill that could not be taught is the sense of observation and the ability to navigate the shadowed streets. The work of Gaslight Lamplighters was essential to the city during the nighttime.
Payment & Reimbursement
Gaslight Lamplighters were typically paid by the city or the Lamplighters Guild responsible for their employment. Their wage varied based on different factors, such as experience, the number of lights they were responsible for, or the size of the area they covered. It varied also by the size of the city that employed them.
In the city of Ravenspire, the salary was very modular, and was calculated like this:
- Monthly basic salary: 30 Ravens
- Challenging Weather (Storm, Dense Fog etc): +2 Ravenbits per Light
- Exceptional Performance Bonus: Up to 5 Ravens per Month
- Bonus: Rental House for 8 Ravens in the assigned District
- Bonus: Free Medical Care in any city hospital
Since the demand for Gaslight Lamplighters declined when the city switched to electric lighting 20 years ago, most Gaslight Lamplighters still in employment switched over to maintenance for private gas lamps, which are still in use in most households.
