Rose Year

The Rose Year is an ancient tradition that has been practiced in many cultures around the world as a time of respectful courtship between a young man and the parents of his chosen partner. However, in recent decades, this tradition has become increasingly outdated. The Rose Year was seen as a transition from the "wild years" of young adulthood to a genuine interest in settling down with a woman. This is because the Rose Year required a full year of dedication, which was intended to test the seriousness of the young man's interest.

Proving Yourself

During this year, the young man dedicates special attention not to the woman herself but to her parents. This is necessary to gain their approval and respect, but also to prove to them he can take care of their daughter and his potential wife.

A lot of importance is placed on various situations where the young man can show his suitability. For example, he is expected to give thoughtful gifts like roses to the mother of his potential bride, invite them at least once for a dinner at his own home, and organize various evenings together. Depending on the young man's social status, the activities during these evenings can range from a picnic to a visit to the opera or theater.

It is also expected that the future son-in-law accompanies both his future bride and her mother to social events, publicly displaying his interest. Romantic involvement with other women is strictly prohibited during this time, even though there was a time when prostitutes were acceptable in such circumstances.

A dying Tradition

Today, the rose year is a tradition that is only performed in the upper classes of Mortavia. The changed society, based on technological advancement and magical development, has way more freedom for individuals, and way faster paced relationships. The more traditional Upper Classes perform the rose year sometimes, and for the aristocracy, this is a must-do until today.
