Chapter 21. Blight at the End of the Tunnel II
General Summary
Esper casts firebolt at lock on chest – which doesn’t open.
The quarterstaff fails to do the job as well.
Tries thieves tools, to no avail.
Meanwhile, in basement, DC and Alyric step further in to the cavern than everyone else and take damage from the cold air, Alyric swiping the three bodied statue as they rush back out.
Esper, knows her religion, and links the statue to the druids “Powerful one”.
The group debate where the power comes from, Strahd or another power?? Some members of the group wonder on whether there are more powers at play.
Ichabod wants to test the staff, Vass accompanying him, whilst DC wants to interview the captive druid.
Vass talks with Raven -
Ichabod steps outside to test staff, the blights stay away from him. He uses the staff, and feels his own life-force seep out, but the blights disperse
DC & Alyric interrogate the druid. He doesn’t seem scared at all, even healing himself a little bit. DC charms him and asks for Alyric to leave.
Druid interrogation - “We are the people of the mountain” “My order lives on the hill” “The people do not worship Strahd like we do!” (DC - “I met the chap, not such a bad guy!”) “We are here to destroy the winery, they stole our magic!” (DC begins to undo the cuffs - “Who sent you?”) “It was the witch! The hag! The lady of the Swamp! She told us about the seed buried in the soil.” “We took it back a week ago” “She is clever, she tells us of magics!” (DC - “what of the statue?”) “The Roxanna” “Lady of the Fanes” “Before my lord freed the lands” “I will be the one, I will bring back the power! The people of the mountain will prophecise me!!” The Druid ran down the open tunnel “you found it! You found the hidden passage” and swiftly fell to the floor, the damage from the cold mould enough to finish him off.
“Oh well!” DC begins to fill bag of holding with wine.
Ichabod heads to cavern despite warnings of damage from the air.
“Whats in the chest?” - A lot of goodies, all left behind.
Ichabod suggest using the staff to command the blights to pull a cart of wine. The group is generally dismayed at this suggestion!
Vass speaks with a Raven. It tells him to “burn the stick”.
After a democratic decision is made (Alyric - “the staff is Eeevvviiilllll Ichabod!”) Ichabod snaps the staff over his knee. As he does so, it emits an ungodly screetch - we all feel our ears are bleeding, whilst Ichbod is on the verge of vomiting.
Outside, there are more screams - open the door and are met with the sense and smell of rotting. All blights in a 300ft radius have been destroyed.
The gang make their way back to the farm. Durwin Markitov can’t quite believe it. “You said it couldn’t be done. However, we have cleared the farm of Evil!”
