The Church is protected by an ancient blessing - the consecration of the bones of St Andral. St Andral was a holy man who performed an act of great selflessness.
He protected a man - one of Strahd's guards. Sickened at his master's evil, the guard had killed Strahd - but when he saw the Devil resurrected, wreathed in darkness, he fled. Andral took him in and stayed with him until the end of the man's life. Upon passing away, Andral's bones retained their protective powers, and were kept in a crypt under the church.
