Faelyn Shadowseeker

Faelyn Shadowseeker

“In the absence of light, darkness prevails. There are things that go bump in the night, but rest assured, we are the ones who bump back”.   My brother and I were twins born on the material plane, and despite not looking the part of what one might consider a true Shadar-kai, our heritage would always connect us to the distant echo of the Shadowfell.   We both took after our mother, an Elf of the material plane, fair skinned with silver-white hair and grey-blue eyes. It was our father who bore the more obvious signs of our heritage with ashen skin, raven colored hair and deep green eyes.   Our parents trained us well. We learned to use the gifts of the Shadowfell to strike down the undead and the monstrous. As our parents would often say: It is the life-long duty of the Shadar-kai to one day venture out into the world and uphold our people’s oath to the Raven Queen:   Hold no pity for those who have died, as death is the natural end to life. Bring down the proud who would try to cast off the chains of their fate. Strike down undeath wherever it is found and uphold the natural law of both life and death.   And venture, we did. It wasn’t long before we found some close ties in a monster hunting group called the Red Wraiths. We fought for gold, for glory, and most importantly, to protect those in need. We took on bigger and bigger foes, seeking anything that would challenge our skills. It seemed that nothing could stand in our way.   Until the day my brother died.   It should have been an easy job. We were a four man squad sent to clear a group of undead from an abandoned cathedral. We laughed about all the ale we would drink with the reward money from our victory.   The first wave was easy. I clung to the darkness and picked off anything that got too close to my teammates just as my father taught me all those years ago. My brother always leaned towards our mother’s roguish style, flourishing his blades as he attacked.   No one anticipated the creature that sprung from the shadows. It toyed with them, wounding them like a cat that played with its food, and with a final stroke of its claws, it ended their lives one by one. Then it came for me, slashing and clawing like the rest. Too close for my bow. I pulled on the gifts of the Shadowfell and vanished, appearing beside my fallen brother. I take up his weapons and prepare for the next attack. I was never as skilled with the blade as my brother was, and clearly about to meet the same fate as the others.   I’ll see you soon, Brother.   I prepared to return to the Raven Queen, but just before the deathblow came, everything vanished.   When I awoke, I was in the fields just outside of Kallik. I had just enough strength to push open the doors to the guild hall before collapsing to the floor. I had returned to the Red Wraith keep. Alone.   I obsessed over the Shadow I saw for days after the encounter. How it moved, how it attacked, and how it bore not a single brand from any of my fallen comrades. I should have fallen with them. I considered joining my brother in the dark embrace of the Raven Queen. I felt no fear, I was ready to make the journey, but to die without meaning would be an insult to those who fought so valiantly. But whenever I look at the dagger and shortsword on the wall, His weapons, I feel such overwhelming sorrow.   Hold no pity for those who have died. For death, is the natural end to life.   A voice calls to me from nothingness.   Is it vengeance you desire? Follow the threads of Fate, Child. If you have the strength to make the journey, it can be yours.   I wake suddenly in my chambers. I didn’t even realize I had fallen asleep. I hear the sound of people gathering outside. A new expedition posting, I suppose. I pull on my boots and make my way down to see what all the fuss is about. An expedition to Ilthinion, the land of Shadows.   Follow the threads of Fate...
