Burgomaster (BUR-go-mas-tur)
This is the title given to the leaders of the major towns of Barovia. This title is equivalent to Baron, and in fact, when addressing the individual, the title "Baron" is used as an honorific.
The towns and lands around them are technically considered "Baronies." Barovia does exude some characteristics of a feudal society, however Barovia today is considered more of a prison hellscape than a feudalistic county. Most people don't live outside the borders of the village or town in their barony because of the dangers that lie in the wilderness.
But those who carry the title of "burgomaster" still have an impact on the lives the everyday Barovian citizens that live in these towns.

Appointment
The appointment of a Barovian burgomaster is usually passed down through bloodlines, but situations such as civil unrest, the untimely demise of the ruling family, etc. can lead to a burgomaster's replacement, either by the city or the barony's liege.
Duties
The burgomaster decides laws, collects taxes, and oversees the relationship between the economic, religious, and militaristic powers of the town or village.
They are usually also responsible for giving a percentage of their taxes and armies to their direct liege, however the current Count has been less concerned with the collection of taxes so much as he is in his own self interests.
