Lady Fiona Wachter's Journal

This appears to be an old journal from Fiona's teen years. Most pages contain slice of life information, about her parents' tutelage, her journeys through Barovia, and her transition to adulthood. Many of the pages contain typical teen drama, but some passages catch your eye:   “It’s happening! I convinced my parents to allow me to embark on a diplomatic mission to the village of Shadowgrange to make political connections and gain experience as the scion of Wachterhaus. They shall send notice to Burgomeister Indir Grygorovich on the morrow.”   [a few pages later]   “I have decided to make a detour on my way to Shadowgrange. If I am to make some political connections, why not go straight to the top? People always talk about the Devil in hushed tones, trying to make sure I don't hear them as if I were still a child. I'm an adult, I can handle it. They're probably just over-reacting, like when they found me making out with Ivan in the gardens. Gotta find a better spot, Fi.”   [a few paragraphs of frustrated rambling later…]   “Wow, what a day. Strahd was a perfect gentleman and showed me around Ravenloft for most of the afternoon. He's much more attractive than the silhouette they put on our coins; they should really update those. Maybe people would like him more if they knew the real him, like I now do! He even offered to make me a Vampire, but when I said no, he didn't mind at all. I can be of much more use to him the way I am anyway. Imagine having to request permission to enter every time you visit someone? Great attribute for a diplomat, Fi. No, I think this will work much better and Strahd seemed very proud when I explained. He even gave me a little gift to keep me company so that I'd never truly be alone in this world, and to get in touch with him in case I urgently need to. He's not the terror that baron Vargon Vallakovich makes him out to be at all. So why does he make our lives so miserable to protect us from Strahd? What an imbecil. Strahd may own the place, but he's not out to harm the people of Vallaki. Why would he? He's got better things to do. He is more like, like some kind of negligent landlord.”   [a few pages later…]   “On my way back from Shadowgrange, I decided to stop at the Vistani encampment by Tser Pool to meet the famous seer: Madam Eva. I'd heard great stories from Ivan. Apparently, she is the real deal! She was very agreeable, but wow she was old. It looks like I was just on time; I don't think she'll be around much longer sadly. Madam Eva actually read my future like in the fairytales. I don't know yet what to think, it sounded a bit scary to be honest: First there will be the coming of an outsider to Vallaki, foreign to this land. The coming of this outsider will mark the beginning of a new age in Vallaki. The coming of the outsider will also bring a great ruin. A purge on the town like none other. But when the ruin is done, the blood of the outsider will shed sunlight on Vallaki yet again. A new age and a purge in Vallaki? Does that mean we'd finally be rid of the Baron? And sunlight? Of all things?! I can scarce believe it.”   [some pages later]

“I have scoured the old stories and couldn't find any mention of sunlight except for those in fairytales, of course. It is supposed to feel very warm against the skin and make you happy and relaxed. Hard to imagine weather doing that. Perhaps it is meant metaphorically? And all this will require a foreigner? I thought nobody could leave or enter Barovia besides the Vistani and they already live here! But if this prophecy is true, it must be possible for others to enter... and maybe leave? I'll need to ask around to see if it happened before. Maybe Krezk holds some answers. I have heard the Abbot is very knowledgeable.”   [the last page of the journal, dated several years later…]   “I keep turning the prophecy around in my mind, trying to find different interpretations and nuances. Outsiders, ruin, purges, what does it all mean? I have established it is possible for outsiders to visit these lands, but they are few and far between. I will have to remain vigilant and be ready to support the outsider once they arrive in Vallaki. The Dawn's Embrace has successfully infiltrated the Reformation Center and the Baron's household. I do not look forward to the purge, but if that is what it takes, best make it as quick and efficient as possible. How to deal with the blood of the outsider is still unclear; is it their blood, sweat, and tears? Their actual blood? Their death? I am afraid I will have to kill them after the purge just to cover all bases. We have one chance at this, best to be thorough. Sunlight will warm our skin once more. I will make sure of it.”
