The Spiral Door

The Fey are tricky.  They can hide in an alley, they can hide in some broken down log in the woods.  Learning to track them down can take a lifetime, and most likely will get you killed.  But there is one thing that always gives them away.  The Spiral Door.  The poor wretches can't seem to help carving it all over any area they choose to squat in.  Find that, and you know they are close.
—  Francis Charrier, peasant turned Fey Hunter in Rhennes
Longer ago than anyone can remember, maybe centuries, maybe millennia, the elven lords of the Fey and all their ilk were banished to the Feywild.  Through magic the like of which has never been seen since the ancient warlords of the humans sealed the Feywild shut, and hid the key where no man or beast could ever find it again.     However many Fey creatures, Seelie and Unseelie alike, found themselves trapped outside the Feywild.  Satyrs, pixies, boggarts, and gnomes all found themselves cut off from the magic of their true home.  This magic is what sustains them, and without it they are a faded, dwindling people.     Some of the Fey have turned to dark magic to sustain themselves, others hibernate for long ages in the hope of awaking and finding the Fey restored.  Still others actively search for the ways and means to return the Fey world to the Mundane Plane.  These Fey loyalists all share a common symbol, the Spiral Door.

Meaning

The Spiral Door combines two sacred symbols, the spiral representing the journey and change of life as it unfolds; and the door which represents the moment when humans created the concept of inside and outside.

Use

The Spiral Door is commonly etched into stone or wood in and around the areas where Fey have made their homes.  It is believed that the symbol will bring good luck, at a minimum it may signal other Fey in the area that you are nearby and may need help.  Over time Fey Hunters have learned to use the symbol to track down the Fey down, but the Fey stubbornly continue to use it to mark their surroundings.
