The Sundering

No one knows who started the conflict that would come to be known as the Sundering but what is known is that the most powerful and terrible of arcane weapons, long stockpiled by the Empires of Felizeen, were unleashed continent wide.    Cities were burned to a crisp in an instant, rivers and lakes were polluted, mountains crushed and valleys lifted up to form new cliffs. Horrible plagues that turned their victims into undead hordes spread across whole fiefs and all manner of monsters were seen across the land in an orgy of violence. The Sundering resulted in the complete destruction of several empires and the creation of a no man’s land in the center of Felizeen known as the Wastes.

Legacy

It can be hard to determine where the Duchies end and the Wastes begin. The boundaries of this region shift and flow over time, receding for a few years only to rush back into an area once it has been reclaimed. The land is broken and warped, and those that live here do so in constant fear of the monsters that roam their lands. Most everyone has fled but here and there pockets of stubborn resistance hold out against the horrors that lurk beyond their villages walls. It is said that a few Earls, Dukes, and minor Lords still retain their lands inside the Wastes, but at what cost? Ghastly tales of cannibalism, occultism, and tyranny abound.   Despite this there are numerous opportunities for those both ambitious and cunning enough to stay alive. Ruins cover the land, the remnants of several countries now overgrown or home to monsters squatting in the dark. Many an adventuring group has made it rich bringing back loots from forgotten cities in the Waste and young (or old) nobles with little prospect of inheritance have been known to try to carve out their own holdings from the anarchy. In addition Vatissidus has been sending crusades into the interior of the Wastes for years in the attempt to find a final solution to the problem. Their continual efforts in this regard have drained their coffers and strained their prestige abroad.

Great Rebellion

In order to fund the reconstruction of Felizeen, the various empires began to heavily tax their colonies in Nekoti.  When taxes could not be paid the people were forced to work under the gaze of imperial armies, where many died.  This would lead to the Great Rebellion, where the Empires of Felizeen lost almost all their holdings in the New World.
